Summary
The new first year students arrive at Duel Academy via plane. They are gathered in the auditorium and met Chancellor Sheppard. Sheppard congratulated their acceptance into Duel Academy and told them to settle into their assigned dorms. Both Jaden Yuki and Syrus Truesdale are assigned to the Slifer Red dorm, while Bastion Misawa is placed in Ra Yellow. Jaden and Syrus arrive at their dorm, with Syrus thinking that the building looks rundown, while Jaden comments that it provides a great view of the beach. They find the top bunk of the room already occupied by Chumley Huffington, who explains he was held back last year. He explains how the dorm system works:  The Obelisk Blue dorm is reserved for "elite" students who do very well on their entrance exams and have inside connections, while the Ra Yellow dorm is the middle-ground, housing students with successful exams. Finally, the Slifer Red dorm is where new students are placed that the Academy feels have little potential.
+
A helicopter carries the new first-year students to the Duel Academy island. Syrus Truesdale and Bastion Misawa observe the scenery from their window seats while Jaden Yuki casually sleeps in his aisle seat. The narration explains that Duel Academy is located on an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. With the new term starting in autumn, the students accepted into the academy are gathered there (In the dub, the narration is replaced with dialogue. The helicopter pilot informs the transported students via the public address system that they can see their new home away from home and implores them not to shove just because they are excited. He then advises the students to fasten their seatbelts and sit upright, as they will land shortly at their next stop: the Duel Academy island).

Afterward, Jaden and Syrus walked around the school a bit, and found the Duel arena where students can practice their dueling skills. Two Obelisk students told them to get lost because the arena was to be only used for the Obelisks, but then one recognized Jaden as the student who beat Dr. Crowler. He called for Chazz Princeton, the Obelisk Blue who watched Jaden Duel as well. Chazz bragged that Jaden wouldn’t stand a chance against him in a Duel, but Alexis Rhodes intervenes, commenting that they would be late for their welcoming dinners. He was late for the welcoming dinner.
+
Later, the first-year students, wearing different colored uniforms, gather at the auditorium where they are greeted by Chancellor Sheppard on the large screen. Sheppard welcomes the first-year students and briefly explains that they made it by opening Duel Academy's narrow gate with their skills. He tells the students to enjoy their studies and dream of becoming the future King of Games while Jaden repeatedly nods off (In the dub, Sheppard greets the students and introduces himself. He tells the students they are the best and brightest young Duelists in the world. He orders the students to get settled in at their assigned dorms and guarantees they will find their dorm comfortable, depending on their rank, to which he ends with a chuckle).

That night, each of the dorms had their own dinner. The Obelisks and Ras had a five-course meal, but the Slifer’s hardly had anything. They were introduced to the headmaster, Professor Banner and his cat Pharaoh, and then ate away. Jaden later receives a message from Chazz on his PDA, who tells Jaden to meet him the Duel arena for an Ante Duel. Jaden and Syrus snuck out to the arena, and he and Chazz got ready to Duel. Chazz is confident he'll win, as he was the top student at his prep school.
+
Outside of the main building at a stone slab with the engraving of "Baby Dragon", Jaden and Syrus, both of whom are wearing red uniforms, check their PDAs for information regarding the academy's dormitories. Jaden states that the dorms are divided into three buildings and sees that he and Syrus are assigned to the Slifer Red dorm. As Bastion passes them, Jaden addresses him as "Number 2" and asks if he is a Slifer Red as well. Bastion answers "no" and asks Jaden if he can tell by the yellow color of his uniform; he is assigned as a Ra Yellow student. (In the dub, Bastion sarcastically mentions the yellow sleeves and yellow buttons on his uniform and answers "I don't think so"). Jaden wonders if that was the purpose of their uniform colors. Bastion wonders why Jaden would be assigned to Slifer Red, and the latter addresses his offense by the way Bastion said that. Bastion tells Jaden not to worry about it and says goodbye, addressing the latter as "Number 1" before walking away. Jaden chuckles and wishes Bastion luck and to work hard. Bastion stops and motions in the direction of the dorm that Jaden and Syrus are assigned to. (In the dub, Bastion asks Jaden if he has just figured out the significance behind his red uniform, which Jaden aggrievedly asks Bastion if he ever thought he was colorblind. Bastion asks Jaden if he is colorblind, but Jaden laughs and answers no before Bastion turns and walks away. Jaden tells Bastion he will be seeing him around the dorms, but Bastion stops and voices his doubts before pointing in the direction of the dorm.)

The Duel is interrupted by Alexis, who warns them that security is en route, as having a Duel after-hours is against the rules. The Duel ends prematurely and everyone sneaks out. Jaden reveals he had just drawn "Monster Reborn", which would have him revive his "Elemental Hero Flame Wingman" and attack Chazz's "Mefist the Infernal General" to win the Duel, as well as to claim Chazz's "Mefist the Infernal General" card. He is correct, as Chazz had only "Helpoemer" and "Pandemonium Watchbear" in his hand, neither of which would have changed the outcome.
+
Upon arriving at the dorm, Syrus notes how run-down the dormitory appears while Jaden admires the ocean view from over the back deck (in the dub, Syrus calls the dorm an outhouse with a deck). They locate their dorm room where they are bunking together, and Jaden takes an immediate liking despite its small size (in the dub, Syrus observes the dorm room's small size, but Jaden replies that Syrus is a small guy). An optimistic Syrus wonders if being roommates is a mutual destiny. Syrus imagines himself wearing the outfit of Priest Seto (wielding the Millennium Rod and Jaden wearing the outfit of Pharaoh Atem (wearing the Millennium Puzzle) as he wonders if they could be their reincarnations. Syrus considers Jaden cool from his recent performance at the entrance exams and asks him if he could call him "Pharaoh". Jaden grimaces at this and tells Syrus that the title sounds weird to him. Syrus then asks to call him "big bro" instead because he's much better. (In the dub, the dialogue is changed where Syrus wonders if he and Jaden are the reincarnations of the guardian Seto and an Egyptian pharaoh, respectively. Jaden grimaces and tells Syrus that it sounds lame, to which Syrus replies that it could be true.) Jaden tells Syrus that Duelists have no hierarchies and consider them both rivals. Syrus becomes downcast and admits that he is nowhere close to Jaden's level, but Jaden assures him that it is not true and they will have to work as hard as they can to become the next King of Games (in the dub, Jaden tells Syrus they broke the mold when they made them, to which Syrus dismally replies it was for different reasons. Jaden tells Syrus they'll have to work on his confidence, but first, they'll have to work on their room).

 +
Jaden opens up the curtains to let the sunlight brighten up their room, but a voice orders him to shut the curtains (in the dub, the voice angrily tells him the curtains were closed for a reason). Jaden and Syrus discover that someone is sleeping in the topmost bunkbed, with Jaden apologizing for not noticing him. The person addresses Jaden and Syrus as students with heads full of dreams as he sits up and glowers at them, causing a superimposed image of "Des Koala" to manifest over his face, causing both Jaden and Syrus to scream and hold each other (in the dub, the superimposed image of "Des Koala" is cut and is replaced with an animalistic growl). The roommate angrily corrects them that he is no koala and introduces himself as Chumley Huffington (in the dub, Chumley tells Jaden and Syrus to stop their screaming and demands to know who they are and why they were in his room). Jaden apologizes and introduces himself followed by Syrus. Chumley lays back down and turns his back to them, asking them if they know what their Slifer Red uniform means, to which Jaden and Syrus answer they do not (in the dub, Chumley offers to tell Jaden and Syrus how things work at Duel Academy. Jaden asks what things while Syrus guesses when Parent's Weekend is going to be). Chumley informs them that their red uniform stands for "red zone", meaning they are dangerous. Chumley explains the dormitories assigned to each student based on their grades: Obelisk Blue is occupied by students who have earned excellent grades since middle school and Ra Yellow is for students who have earned excellent grades in high school. Syrus asks Chumley about Slifer Red, to which Chumley answers that it is occupied by students with poor grades and are expected to drop out. Chumley clarifies that any student assigned to Slifer Red has no future (in the dub, Chumley calls the Slifer Red students, the "Red Wonders". As Syrus remarks how the nickname is cool, Chumley clarifies that it is short for how he wonders how flunkies like them have ever gotten this far. Chumley tells Jaden and Syrus they are at the bottom of the barrel before turning away and introducing himself).

Later, Jaden and Syrus walk along the path from the Slifer Red dormitory. As Syrus becomes depressed by his assigned dorm and its significance, Jaden admits he loves red. He considers it the perfect color for a passionate guy like himself (in the dub, Jaden likes red because it is short for "red hot"). Jaden tells Syrus that they only started their time at Duel Academ. After Syrus agrees with Jaden, he suddenly becomes enveloped in a fiery aura as he tells himself there is no point in getting depressed and encourages himself to do his best. While Syrus attempts to encourage himself, Jaden is suddenly distracted by something and runs off in another direction. As Syrus finishes, he notices Jaden is running toward the main building and begs him to wait up. (In the dub, Syrus says that "red" stands for "red hot", "scorching", and "dangerous". He compares himself to a furnace or a big bottle of salsa dip. When Syrus turns to see Jaden running toward the main building, he tells himself that he's not a dip.) Jaden tells Syrus that people are Dueling somewhere, but Syrus protests that he didn't hear anything (in the dub, Syrus asks Jaden how he knows there is a Duel, to which Jaden replies that he just knows).

Jaden explores the halls of Duel Academy followed by Syrus, who asks how he knew if people were Dueling (in the dub, Syrus asks Jaden if he has a sixth sense with Dueling). Jaden answers that he can smell the Duel, but Syrus skeptically asks what a Duel smells like (in the dub, Jaden says that it's in the air and questions Syrus if he can smell it. Syrus answers he could if the pollen count was lower). Jaden enters the academy's Dueling arena against Syrus's advisement, who quickly admires it for its state-of-the-art technology. Syrus voices how nice it would be to Duel in the arena, and Jaden encourages the idea. Syrus voices his concern if he and Jaden are allowed to Duel in the arena, but Jaden insists they do since they are students here; however, they are stopped by two Obelisk Blue students, Taiyou Torimaki and Raizou Mototani, who notice them entering the arena. Raizou explains that the Duel Field is no place for dropout boys from Slifer Reds and points to the crest of "Obelisk the Tormentor" above the entrance, which signifies that it belongs to the Obelisk Blue students. Syrus apologizes and urges Jaden to return to their dorm, but Jaden refuses and happily asks Taiyou and Raizou if they would Duel him. Taiyou and Raizou recognize Jaden as the entrance examinee who Dr. Crowler, and Raizou calls out for Chazz Princeton, who is sitting in the bleachers next to the entranceway. Chazz sits upright and glowers at Jaden, who introduces himself and asks Taiyou and Raizou who Chazz is, much to Chazz's annoyance (in the dub, after Jaden introduces himself, he asks for clarification of Chazz's name is "Chuzz"). Taiyou is appalled to learn that Jaden has never heard of Chazz, who is a first-year student and the #1 of the super-elites, while Raizou adds that Chazz is widely considered to be the future King of Games (in the dub, Taiyou corrects Jaden's mistake and explains that Chazz is the #1 Duelist at Duel Prep School, and urges Jaden to pay him the proper respect). Jaden considers it weird and tells the two Obelisk Blue students that the King of Games has to be #1, and the title of #1 belongs to him (in the dub, Jaden says Chazz can't be the future King of Games because that is what he is going to be). Taiyou and Raizou laugh at this notion and Taiyou chastises Jaden for not knowing his place as a drop-out boy. Chazz tells Taiyou to "be quiet" and informs him that Jaden is better than both of them and reminds them that despite being careless, he managed to defeat Crowler during the entrance exams (in the dub, Taiyou voices his disbelief in Jaden's claim to become the next King of Games due to his status as a Slifer Red. Chazz tells him and Raizou to "can it" and tells them that Jaden could be correct since he defeated Crowler and his "legendary rare monster" and it takes some skill to pull it off).
 +

 +
Jaden replies that it was skill. Chazz challenges Jaden so he can look at his skill, to which Jaden agrees (in the dub, Jaden acknowledges that Chazz is correct about his skill, but Chazz asks if his victory was luck instead. He challenges Jaden to find out, which Jaden agrees to by telling him to "bring it"). At that point, Alexis Rhodes walks in and asks what they are doing at the Dueling arena. As Syrus is stricken with Alexis, Chazz confidently answers that Jaden was naive to how the world works and would teach him about the school's harsh realities (in the dub, Alexis remarks that the other students present in the arena are a motley crew. When Syrus asks who she is, Chazz greets Alexis and asks if she came to watch him mop the floor with Jaden. He guarantees that it will be a short but entertaining Duel). Alexis informs them that the dorms' welcoming parties are about to begin, and Chazz, Taiyou, and Raizou immediately leave. Alexis warns Jaden and Syrus not to get provoked by Chazz and calls them a bunch of good-for-nothings (in the dub, Alexis apologizes to Jaden and Syrus for Chazz's treatment and not everyone in Obelisk Blue shares the same sentiment. She tells them that he is a jerk, especially towards Slifer Reds). Jaden asks Alexis if she fell for him at first sight, but Syrus quickly replies that it is unlikely (in the dub, Jaden assures Alexis that it's cool and claims he could beat them in one turn. Syrus tells him he needs to work on his overconfidence, and Jaden corrects himself by claiming two turns, maybe two-and-a-half). Alexis giggles at this, much to Jaden's embarrassment and Syrus's nervous amusement. Alexis informs Jaden that the Slifer Red dorm will also host its welcoming party, prompting Jaden and Syrus to return. As Jaden and Syrus exit the Duel Field, Jaden turns back and asks Alexis for her name, to which she introduces herself. Jaden introduces himself before turning to run back to his dorm, with Syrus muttering that Jaden thinks he's so smooth (in the dub, Syrus asks Jaden if he would introduce him to Alexis). Alexis remains behind, repeating Jaden's name.

Later that evening, the dormitories and the staff members serving as dorm leaders host their welcoming parties. Dr. Crowler hosts the welcoming party for the Obelisk Blue boys' dorm; Fonda Fontaine hosts the welcoming party for the Obelisk Blue girls' dorm; and Sartyr hosts the welcoming party for the Ra Yellow dormitory. At the Slifer Red dorm, however, the students are dismayed by the simple dinner they were provided, with one student stating that the other dorms got large banquets, while others assumes that the dorm's residential cat lying on the table is the leader. At that moment, the Slifer Red dorm leader introduces himself as Professor Lyman Banner, the alchemy class teacher. While Banner introduces himself, Jaden happily and noisily eats the food while Syrus informs him that Banner hasn't finished his introductions. Banner approaches their table and tells him that he is not offended and informs the students that he is looking forward to seeing his students (in the dub, Banner asks the students to tell them something about themselves before he is interrupted by Jaden eating his dinner. Syrus informs Jaden that he has to say something about himself, but Jaden answers by telling them he's starving. Banner happily says that since they don't feel like waiting, they should eat).
 +

 +
After the dinner, Syrus pours green tea into different tea cups while Jaden remarks how he is stuffed. He asks why the other students didn't eat, and Syrus replies that he is the only one who ate a second portion (in the dub, Jaden compliments Banner's cooking, and Syrus agrees and adds that he seems to be a nice guy). Jaden accepts the tea from Syrus, but Chumley, curled up in his bed, refuses. Jaden rebukes Chumley for refusing Syrus's tea, but Syrus reassures Jaden. Chumley proceeds to answer Jaden's question, stating that it wasn't the food, it was the depressing circumstances of the students assigned to Slifer Red that prevented them from eating it (in the dub, Chumley strongly refuses the tea because it makes people wet the bed. He stammers while attempting to cover up his experience before he finishes by telling them he's trying to sleep). Suddenly, Jaden's PDA goes off. He receives a video email from Chazz, who challenges him to an Ante Duel in the Duel Field after midnight. Jaden remarks how things are getting interesting, and Chumley mutters it would be the end of his enthusiasm before he turns over in his bed (in the dub, Jaden remarks how he gets to Duel in the arena, while Chumley tells Jaden that since that he's Dueling Chazz, then all he's got is trouble).
 +

 +
Later, as Jaden and Syrus enter the main building, Syrus voices his protest and reminds Jaden that Alexis advised him not to be provoked by Chazz (in the dub, Syrus tells Jaden he doesn't think it's a good idea). Jaden replies that if he is challenged to a Duel, he has to accept it. They enter the Duel Field and see Chazz, Taiyou, and Raizou waiting for them. Chazz challenges Jaden to show him if his victory over Crowler was luck or skill. Jaden challenges Chazz to show him how skilled the Duel Academy elites are (in the dub, Chazz tells Jaden it's time to find out if beating Crowler was a fluke or a fact. Jaden replies that they are going to find out which of them will become the next King of Games). Chazz reminds Jaden that they are playing an Ante Duel, which Jaden acknowledges. They activate their Duel Disks and begin their Duel.
 +

 +
The Duel begins with Chazz going first. He draws "Chthonian Polymer" while his opening hand consists of "Mefist the Infernal General", "Call of the Haunted", "Pandemonium Watchbear", "Helpoemer", and "Reborn Zombie". Chazz Normal Summons "Reborn Zombie" in Defense Position and Sets a card before ending his turn. Chazz internally monologues how in a Duel, luck is a factor because a Duelist is reliant on their draws, but victory is determined by a strategy based on precise calculation. He then tells Jaden that because of their status, the difference in their intelligence has already determined the result of the Duel (this part is cut from the dub). Jaden replies that Duels are not battles by a person's head but by the Duelists' clashing of their passionate hearts (in the dub, Jaden tells Chazz that's one way to start a Duel, but he's going to go a little bigger).
 +

 +
Jaden begins his turn. He draws "Elemental Hero Avian". His hand contains "Elemental Hero Burstinatrix", "Elemental Hero Clayman", "Elemental Hero Sparkman", "Polymerization", and "Winged Kuriboh". When Jaden notices the "Winged Kuriboh" card in his hand, he says its luck gives him nothing to fear (in the dub, Jaden tells "Winged Kuriboh" it's good to see him, but he'll use it a little later). He activates the Spell Card "Polymerization", surprising Chazz (in the dub, the scenes are compressed together). Jaden fuses "Avian" and "Burstinatrix" to Fusion Summon "Elemental Hero Flame Wingman" in Attack Position. After Jaden shows off his "favorite card", Chazz reveals that he analyzed Jaden's Duel from the entrance exams and he has fallen into his trap (in the dub, Jaden reminds Chazz that he told him he would start big. Chazz says that he was counting on Jaden Summoning "Flame Wingman". When Jaden asks Chazz why, he answers that his face-down card was a Trap Card that he set off and calls him a "slacker"). Chazz activates his Set Counter Trap Card "Chthonian Polymer". As the card is activated, it is surrounded by a dark aura. Syrus asks what "Chthonian Polymer" is when Alexis arrives and explains the card's effect: When the opponent Fusion Summons a monster, "Chthonian Polymer" allows the player to Tribute a monster to take control of that monster. Syrus asks what that means (in the dub, after Syrus inquires about "Chthonian Polymer", Alexis tells him she had a feeling they would be at the arena before she explains the card's effect to him. Syrus realizes that Jaden Summoned a Fusion Monster). Chazz clenches his fists as he Tributes his "Reborn Zombie", causing the monster to screech as it disappears into a burst of light. "Flame Wingman's" body glows brightly before it travels to Chazz's field and lands in a massive explosion. "Flame Wingman" reappears with a darker shade and a slightly demonic appearance while surrounded by the same dark aura. Syrus is surprised to see Chazz stealing Jaden's monster. As the aura around "Flame Wingman" dissipates, Chazz explains that he knew Jaden used a Fusion Monster to deal the finishing blow to Crowler, so he set a trap for it. He couldn't believe that Jaden would walk into his trap and attributes it to his status as a Slifer Red (in the dub, Syrus asks how Chazz knew to play "Chthonian Polymer". Chazz explains that Jaden became predictable when he wouldn't stop talking about "Flame Wingman" at the exam, so he knew he would use it soon). Jaden notes that a Fusion Summon is a Special Summon and he can still Normal Summon this turn. As Jaden looks into his hand, he notes how none of the monsters in his hand have more ATK or DEF than "Fame Wingman" and wonders if he should ride the Duel out with a defensive monster. Chazz remembers the effect of "Flame Wingman", which deals damage to the opponent equal to the ATK of the monster it destroys by battle, and monologues how Jaden won't go to the next round unscathed (in the dub, Chazz internally urges Jaden to play another monster since he didn't forget "Flame Wingman's" "superpower"). Jaden Normal Summons "Elemental Hero Clayman" in Defense Position and ends his turn.
 +

 +
Chazz begins his next turn. He Normal Summons "Chthonian Soldier" in Attack Position. Chazz declares his attack with "Flame Wingman" with "Skydive Scorcher". The demonic "Fame Wingman" envelops itself with fire and dives at "Clayman", destroying it. Chazz then activates the effect of "Flame Wingman", dealing damage to Jaden equal to the ATK of "Clayman". Jaden is shocked to see the demonic "Flame Wingman" looming over him before raising its dragon arm cannon and preparing to shoot its flames. Syrus and Alexis watch as Jaden is struck by the flames, causing him to scream as his Life Points drop to 3200. Chazz declares a direct attack on Jaden with "Chthonian Soldier" with "Wind Storm Slash". "Chthonian Soldier" strikes at Jaden with its sword, causing him to bend over, fall to his knees, and clutch his abdomen while his Life Points drop to 2000. Chazz brags that without his Fusion Monsters, Jaden has no possible actions. He tells Jaden that he doesn't know how things were in Jaden's small hometown, but he is not on the level of Duel Academy (in the dub, Chazz asks Jaden if knows his place. He tells Jaden that he may have been somebody back home, but in the big leagues, he is nothing but a pathetic little amateur and calls him "Slifer slime"). Chazz Sets a card and ends his turn. He informs Jaden it is his turn while he is slumped over. His shoulders start shuddering and his breathing becomes labored. Chazz asks him if he is crying out of frustration while addressing him as "Number 110"; however, much to Chazz's bewilderment, Jaden is not crying but laughing. Jaden remarks how fun Duel Academy is and asks if it is full of people like Chazz (in the dub, Jaden says the Duel was fun and what he came for. He lists off the trash-talking and the action as something great).
 +

 +
Jaden begins his next turn (this part is cut from the dub). He Normal Summons "Elemental Hero Sparkman" in Attack Position. Jaden declares his attack with "Sparkman" with "Static Shockwave". "Sparkman" shoots a beam of electricity at "Chthonian Soldier", destroying it with a powerful explosion, causing Chazz to recoil as his Life Points drop to 3600. Suddenly, the sword used by the destroyed "Chthonian Soldier" is thrown into the air, turns, and shoots itself towards Jaden, causing his Life Points to drop from 2000 to 1600. Chazz explains the effect of "Chthonian Soldier" when it is destroyed, inflicting the same amount of damage as the battle damage Chazz received. Syrus calls out for Jaden, and Alexis tells Syrus that his "brother" is bold but also careless for disregarding "Chthonian Soldier's" effect. Syrus clarifies that Jaden isn't his actual brother, but more like a big brother in spirit (in the dub, this part was cut and replaced with footage of Chazz clenching his fist when he activated "Chthonian Polymer" earlier). Jaden Sets a card and ends his turn.

Chazz declares it will be his victory as he begins his turn (in the dub, Chazz tells Jaden to play what he likes since his next attack will finish off his Life Points). Chazz declares an attack with "Flame Wingman", but Jaden activates his Set Trap Card, "Mirror Gate". Chazz and Syrus are surprised, and Alexis explains the effect of "Mirror Gate", which activates during a battle between two monsters, causing the attacking monster to switch sides with the targeted monster. Two beams of light envelop both "Flame Wingman" and "Sparkman", and the two monsters disappear before they switch sides, with "Flame Wingman" reverting to his normal appearance. "Sparkman" is surrounded by the dark aura of "Chthonian Polymer" on Chazz's field while "Flame Wingman" is enveloped by a fiery aura it to scream before it is destroyed (in the dub, Jaden tells "Flame Wingman" to go before destroying "Sparkman"). This causes Chazz to scream as his Life Points drop to 3100. Jaden activates the effect of "Flame Wingman", dealing damage to Chazz equal to the ATK of "Sparkman". As Jaden explains the effect, "Flame Wingman" shoots "Sparkman's" electrical attack to Chazz, causing him to scream as his Life Points drop to 1500. Syrus admires Jaden, while Alexis merely states he is not bad (this part is cut from the dub). Syrus compliments Jaden and Alexis follows up by calling him silly. Chazz tells Jaden to not get cocky and calls him a "Slifer Red drop-out" (in the dub, Alexis compliments Jaden by telling him "nice moves" before Chass replies that it is more like "Lucky moves" and calls him "Slifer school scum"). Chazz activates the Spell Card "Chthonian Blast" from his hand, allowing him to destroy a monster on Jaden's field since his monster was destroyed and deal damage to Jaden equal to half the destroyed monster's ATK. A spiraling column of air surrounds "Flame Wingman", causing its body to glow brightly before it is destroyed. Jaden recoils from the damage as his Life Points drop to 550. Chazz then activates his Set Continuous Trap Card "Call of the Haunted" to Special Summon "Chthonian Soldier" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He then Tributes "Chthonian Soldier" to Tribute Summon "Mefist the Infernal General" in Attack Position. Chazz brags that no matter what Jaden does, his victory is already decided and he will take his best card as per the rules of the Ante Duel (this part is cut in the dub). Jaden asks Chazz if he's sure about that, much to his initial annoyance before confidently stating that 99% of Duels are won by intellect while luck constitutes a mere 1% (in the dub, Jaden tells Chazz "not bad". Chazz replies that Jaden is something else for acting confident, but his "lousy monsters" won't get him out of his jam). Jaden hears the voice of the spirit of "Winged Kuriboh", who winks at him. Jaden declares that he will risk it all on one percent and that his next draw will create a miracle (in the dub, Jaden tells "Winged Kuriboh" he knows he's wrong because he doesn't know that Jaden and his monsters have a bond). Jaden begins his turn, draws his card, and smiles.

Suddenly, Alexis hears the resounding footsteps of the en-route security guards. She quickly warns them that Ante Dueling and using the facility after hours are against the rules, which will cause them to get expelled, much to Jaden and Syrus's surprise. Unamused, Alexis takes out the student handbook and asks them if they even read it. Chazz blushes when he realizes that Alexis watched their Duel before Taiyou urges him (in the dub, Alexis warns them that if they are caught, they will be seriously busted. Jaden asks why and says they are all students here. Alexis takes out the student handbook and informs them that the rules say "no off-hours arena Duels". Alexis guesses that Chazz knew that but didn't tell Jaden). Chazz turns and tells Jaden they will have to stop the Duel, but the next time, his victory will be finalized. Jaden protests this, but Chazz tells Jaden he has seen enough of Jaden's skill and tells him his victory over Crowler was a fluke before leaving with Taiyou and Raizou (in the dub, Chazz tells Jaden that he lucked out this time. Jaden protests that the match isn't over, but Chazz disagrees and says he's seen what he came to see and calls him a sorry Duelist; his beating Crowler was a fluke). Syrus and Alexis warn Jaden to hurry, but the latter stubbornly refuses (in the dub, Jaden exclaims his misfortune and adds he had Chazz on the ropes). The security guards enter the Duel Field to see that it is empty.

Outside the entrance to the main building, Alexis meets with Jaden while he is pushed from behind by Syrus. She calls Jaden high-maintenance, who grumbles that he didn't ask for her help while Syrus thanks her (in the dub, Alexis calls Jaden stubborn, to which he replies that he is only stubborn with his Dueling. Syrus thanks Alexis for showing the back way out). Alexis asks Jaden how his hazing by Obelisk Blue went; he answers it wasn't bad, but he wishes it lasted a little bit longer. Alexis asks Jaden if he was on the verge of losing a valuable card because of the Ante Duel rules, but Jaden claims he won the Duel (in the dub, Alexis apologizes that Jaden didn't get to finish his Duel with Chazz, but Jaden assures her it's okay because he knows how the Duel would've ended anyway. Alexis tells Jaden that from her point of view, it could've gone either way between him and Chazz when they stopped. Jaden tells her no way after he drew his last card). He holds up the card he drew on his last turn, which he reveals to be "Monster Reborn", much to Alexis's surprise. A sequence reveals that if the Duel went uninterrupted, Jaden would activate "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Flame Wingman" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Jaden would declare an attack on Chazz's "Mefist" with "Flame Wingman" and destroy it. This would activate the effect of "Flame Wingman" to inflict damage equal to the ATK of "Mefist", winning Jaden the Duel.

While Alexis is surprised, Jaden smirks and walks away with Syrus following him. Alexis stays behind and watches them depart, calling Jaden interesting (in the dub, she thinks it's going to be an interesting year).

"Welcome to Duel Academy", known as "Flame Wingman" in the Japanese version, is the second episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh GX anime. It first aired in Japan on October 13, 2004 and in the United States on October 11, 2005.

Jaden Yuki arrives at Duel Academy and becomes friends with Syrus Truesdale, with whom he is assigned to be roommates along with Chumley Huffington in the Slifer Red dorm. Jaden ends up in a conflict with Obelisk Blue student Chazz Princeton, who believes Jaden's victory of Dr. Crowler to be a fluke.

Summary[edit]

This would activate the effect of "Flame Wingman" to inflict damage equal to the ATK of "Mefist", winning Jaden the Duel.[Notes 1]

While Alexis is surprised, Jaden smirks and walks away with Syrus following him. Alexis stays behind and watches them depart, calling Jaden interesting (in the dub, she thinks it's going to be an interesting year).

Featured Duel: Jaden Yuki vs. Chazz Princeton[edit]

Turn 1: Chazz
Chazz draws "Chthonian Polymer". Chazz's hand contains "Mefist the Infernal General", "Call of the Haunted", "Pandemonium Watchbear ", "Helpoemer" and "Reborn Zombie". He Normal Summons "Reborn Zombie" (1000/1600) in Defense Position and Sets a card.

Turn 2: Jaden
Jaden draws "Elemental HERO Avian". Jaden's hand contains "Elemental HERO Burstinatrix", "Elemental HERO Clayman", "Elemental HERO Sparkman", "Polymerization" and "Winged Kuriboh". He activates "Polymerization" to fuse "Avian" and "Burstinatrix" to Fusion Summon "Elemental HERO Flame Wingman" (2100/1200) in Attack Position. Since Jaden Fusion Summoned a Fusion Monster, Chazz activates his face-down "Chthonian Polymer" to Tribute "Reborn Zombie" and take control of "Flame Wingman". Jaden Normal Summons "Clayman" (800/2000) in Defense Position.

Turn 3: Chazz
Chazz draws "Chthonian Soldier" and subsequently Normal Summons it (1200/1400) in Attack Position. "Flame Wingman" attacks and destroys "Clayman". The effect of "Flame Wingman" then activates, inflicting damage to Jaden equal to his destroyed monster's ATK (Jaden: 4000 → 3200 LP). "Chthonian Soldier" attacks directly (Jaden: 3200 → 2000 LP). Chazz Sets a card.

Turn 4: Jaden
Jaden draws. He then Normal Summons "Sparkman" (1600/1400) in Attack Position. "Sparkman" attacks and destroys "Chthonian Soldier" (Chazz: 4000 → 3600 LP). The effect of "Chthonian Soldier" then activates, inflicting damage to Jaden equal to the Battle Damage Chazz just took (Jaden: 2000 → 1600 LP). Jaden Sets a card.

Turn 5: Chazz
Chazz draws. "Flame Wingman" then attacks "Sparkman", but Jaden activates his face-down "Mirror Gate" to switch control of both battling monsters before damage calculation. "Flame Wingman" destroys "Sparkman" (Chazz: 3600 → 3100 LP). The effect of "Flame Wingman" then activates (Chazz: 3100 → 1500 LP). Chazz then activates "Chthonian Blast" to destroy "Flame Wingman" and inflict damage to Jaden equal to half the ATK of "Flame Wingman" (Jaden: 1600 → 550 LP). He then activates his face-down "Call of the Haunted" to revive "Chthonian Soldier" (1200/1400) in Attack Position. Chazz Tributes "Chthonian Soldier" to Tribute Summon "Mefist the Infernal General" (1800/1700) in Attack Position.

Turn 6: Jaden
Jaden draws "Monster Reborn".

Before Jaden can make a move, the Duel ends with no result due to Alexis hearing campus security coming their way.

Errors[edit]

 • On the fifth turn, Chazz is mistakenly shown drawing "Pandemonium Watchbear", instead of what should have been "Chthonian Blast", judging from the cards shown to have been in his opening hand.

Notes[edit]

 1. This play, however, seems contrary to the fact "Elemental HERO" Fusion Monsters cannot be Special Summoned except by Fusion Summon, even in the anime.
