The Dark Signers, or at least their leader, apparently have the ability to brainwash other duelists.  This is achieved by using a black spider to latch onto a duelist. The victim believes himself to be a Dark Signer, gains a spider birthmark, and does the bidding of the real Dark Signers. When brainwashed, the victim's deck is enchanted, and changed to a deck more fitting to a Dark Signer's. When this spell is broken, the victim's deck is restored to normal, leaving little evidence of the Dark Signers' involvement.

The Dark Signers are a mysterious group of duelists, whose serve as antagonists to the Signers and primary antagonists for the second arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. Their signature cards are "Dark Synchro Monsters". They have been battling 5,000 years against the Signers repeatdly.

They are the gatekeepers to the door that leads to the underworld, and that door resides within Satellite where the first Enerdy generator was built. Also according to Rex Goodin's story about the legend of the Crimson Dragon, the dark marks, on their arms, represent the evil sealed within the Nazca Lines. Each Dark Signer's mark is an embodiment of a Nazxa God, that was defeated by the Crimson Dragon and the Five Dragons.

Their leader, has the ability to brainwash other duelists, by having a black spider to latch onto a victim. The victim believes themself to be a Dark Signer, gains a spider dark mark, and does the bidding of the real Dark Signers. While brainwashed, the victim's Deck is changed to one more fitting to a Dark Signer. When this spell is broken, the victim's Deck is restored to normal.

Dick is an example of one of these brainwashing victims. Before being brainwashed, his deck was simply a Toolbox Warrior Deck. However, upon falling victim to the brainwashing, his deck became a Dark Synchro Deck that used the powerful "Freezing Fitzgerald".

Another victim to fall under their spell was Trudge who dueled Jack Atlas, who was helped by Carly Nagisa. He was defeated and returned to normal.

Dick is the first known Dark Signer to be introduced, although as just stated, he is not a true Dark Signer. Other Dark Signers that have been named include Rudger, who wears red-striped robes and is said to be the leader; Demak, who wears gold-striped robes and is said to bear a grudge against the Signers; and Kyosuke Kiryu, who wears blue-striped robes and once led Yusei's group. Two others, in green and orange (the orange apparently a woman), appear in the second OP.

When a dark signer performs a Dark Synchro summon, they immediately chant "When dark overlaps with dark the doors of the underworld will open. To a world without light! Dark Synchro!" Then the Dark Synchro monster's name.
