Design[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Vance is more pale than his great-grandchildren and wears a monocle. He has lilac eyes and has blue hair as his great-grandchildren do, though his is a darker shade and neatly combed back save a small bang and extends into a beard and mustache. He dresses in expensive clothes; a knee-length dark brown coat with a light nougat lining and a yellow handkerchief in the pocket, a brown waistcoat, a white undershirt with a dark green tie, white gloves and black shoes.
Personality[edit]
Though viewed as dignified at first impressions, Vance is generally enthusiastic and somewhat goofy. As with his great-grandchildren, he has a habit of emphasizing statements a particularly number of times; Vance sometimes repeats statements three times. He is incredibly enthusiastic about gears and his profession, but seems oblivious as to the negative effects this has had on Luke. Yuga Ohdo's enthusiasm for gears prompts them to strike up a fast friendship.
Etymology[edit]
In the Japanese version, Vance's nickname of Gavan comes from his first name, as 暁範 (Akinori) can be read as "Gyouban".
Biography[edit]
History[edit]
Vance often played gear pitch guessing games with his great-grandson Luke.[3] He Dueled Luke at one point and pretended to lose to make Luke happy, but Tiger noticed the cards in his hand and told him off, Luke tearfully admitting he wanted his great-grandfather to take him seriously.[4] A year before the events of the series, Vance gave Luke a wristwatch that caused technology to stop working around Luke, though Luke believes it to be the effects of a demon possessing him.[1]
Goha 6 Siblings[edit]
Tiger brought Luke's friends Yuga Ohdo, Romin Kassidy, Gavin Sogetsu and Swirls to the Kallister family mansion to speak with Vance over Luke's recent declaration of himself as the sixth of the Goha Six. Vance enthusiastically greeted them, only to elbowed in the ribs by Tiger to get him back on track and he confirmed to them that Luke wasn't a Goha. Luke returned home for spare underwear while they were talking, prompting Tiger to hunt him down to Rush Duel him, and Swirls tried to get Vance to talk them down, though Vance was more distracted by Tiger reminding him of pantaloons. Swirls asked Vance to advise Luke during the Duel after Luke revealed his reluctance to take over Kallister Gears, and Vance tried to convince Luke of the merits of gears, but only succeeded in reducing him to a whining mess. Tiger pushed Luke into a corner, but Luke was taken over by a draconian helmet and began calling himself "The Lukeman". He used "Fusion" to fuse two of his monsters together, and Vance held onto Swirls' costume's tail to stop him being blown away by the shockwaves of the Fusion Summon. The Lukeman defeated Tiger and was drawn into the Goha Six's ship, Star Six, as it left, while Vance rushed to his great-granddaughter's side in concern. Once Tiger had recovered, Vance declared his use of "Fusion" meant there was no doubt he was a Kallister and revealed his thoughts of "Fusion" being akin to a set of gears moving together, though Tiger berated him to trying to brush the events off by saying something deep.[3]
