Kurimoto, Makeru

Makeru Kurimoto (くりもと マケル Kurimoto Makeru) is a character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! anime. He is the host of Mutsuba Cable TV.

Design[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Full-body view of Makeru.

Makeru closely resembles Masa from Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS. He is a broad-shouldered man with short light brown hair and brown eyes, in addition to prominent eyebrows. Makeru wears a pale pink collared shirt with the sleeves pinned up, olive green pants held up with a silver-buckled brown belt, a yellow jersey tied loosely around his neck, and smart black shoes, in addition to a white bracelet on his right wrist and a laminated badge around his neck. He also commonly carries his microphone for his presentation duties.

Personality[edit]

Makeru is polite and friendly, and shares Masa's habit of asking the audience for their opinions, though his manner is far less insensitive than Masa's could be. He is depicted as somewhat subservient to changes in his schedule by Manya Atachi, though he does his best to roll with the punches in what he describes as the spirit of live broadcasting.

Etymology[edit]

Makeru's initials in Western order (MK) may reference the term Master of Ceremonies, or MC, as characters beginning with a "k" sound are generally used for English loanwords beginning with the letter "c".

Biography[edit]

History[edit]

At one point, Mutsuba Cable TV were helped by UTS's Yuamu Ohdo.[1]

First Arc[edit]

Child actress Manya Atachi was contracted to appear at Mutsuba Cable TV on Learning the Fun Way - Ultimate Go Rush for a series of Rush Duels against a local elementary school; as they still owed UTS a favor, Makeru agreed to allow UTS' elementary school-age employees to represent Mutsuba Town. Yuamu, a childhood friend of Manya, and her twin brother Yuhi arrived at the Mutsuba Cable Studio with another employee, who Makeru deduced to be recent employee Yudias Velgear. However Manya didn't appear to recognize Yuamu and seemed disinterested, much to Makeru's dismay. Nevertheless they began the broadcast, but after getting Manabu Sogetsu and his MIK agents offstage, Manya announced her intention to Duel first instead of last, so Yuamu also moved forward to Duel. During the Duel, Makeru explained Field Spell Cards and Manya's acting history with the The Cure Maiden to the audience. Yuamu defeated Manya, something Miranda pointed out was contrary to plans, though once again Makeru decided to play with the result, presenting it as a special surprise for the audience.[1]

After filming a commercial for Zubaochil Neo with Yudias, the second round went off-script again, with Manya's dog Bochi Dueling instead of London Kirishima against Manabu from the audience. To Makeru's shock Bochi transformed into a humanoid form, which Manya spun as special effects giving life to Bochi's desire to see Manabu again for vengeance, and Makeru decided to go along with the explanation. After Manabu's victory however, Bochi revealed he had already forgiven Manabu and wanted to see how strong he'd grown, Makeru declaring it a heartwarming end to a tale of vengeance.[2]

Although the local team had won with Manabu's victory, Yuhi still wanted to Duel and dismissed Manabu as not part of the team, so the third round continued. However, Chupataro Kaburagi broke down the wall and demanded to Rush Duel in the third round.[2] Makeru and Miranda were unprepared for the intrusion and continued to insist to the audience this was just TV (while helping themselves to Manya's sushi Chupataro had delivered). Yudias accepted Chupataro's challenge, and Makeru and Miranda were intrigued by his Galaxy Type monsters. To Makeru's shock, a glowing substance emerged from Chupataro's Duel Disk when he Summoned "Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan" and entered the monster's hologram, bringing her to life. Meeeg-chan uppercutted Chupataro, an action Makeru asked Miranda to capture, before taking over the Duel against Yudias, attacking him with real attacks that badly damaged the studio. Yudias eventually defeated Meeeg-chan, causing her to vanish, leaving Makeru screaming that this was TV as he beheld the ruined studio.[3]

A massive monster appeared during a Rush Duel atop Mutsuba Tower between Yudias and another Duelist standing atop the monster, appearing to physically attack the tower as Meeeg-chan had. Makeru and Miranda changed their schedule to cover the Duel, but during it Manya arrived and suggested the event to be the result of TV special effects, claims Makeru quickly agreed with.[4] To Makeru's shock, the same substance that had brought Meeeg-chan to life was spread across Mutsuba Town by Mutsuba Tower, causing monster holograms to materialize and Makeru to wonder if these were also special effects, while Yudias' opponent also entered the second monster he'd summoned. Asaka Mutsuba arrived during the Rush Duel with her Heavy Cavalry, carving away part of the tower and stopping the phenomenon, and Yudias was able to defeat his opponent.[5]

Second Arc[edit]

Mutsuba Cable TV and Manya assisted MIK in covering-up the Rush Duel between Yudias and Zuwijo zir Velgear. To Makeru's shock, their broadcast was briefly interrupted by a protestor claiming the destruction hadn't been planned for TV before MIK agents took him away, though they were able to complete their broadcast and Makeru congratulated Manya on her efforts.[6]
