Ryugu, Phaser

Phaser Ryugu (りゅうぐう フェイザー Ryūgū Feizā) is a character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! anime and the primary antagonist of the fifth arc. He is the founder and commander of MIK, spearheading a crackdown on aliens and their associates in Mutsuba Town during the second season.

Design[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Phaser is a tall man with pale skin, blue eyes with crescent-shaped highlights that hint at his heritage and ovular pupils, and short spiked teal hair and a magenta bang at the front. He wears a military dress uniform; a long black coat with a gold lining and buttons, a high collar and epaulettes with gold fringes, a thick black belt with a heavy silver buckle keeping the coat closed, black pants and shoes with red arrowhead designs, a white collared shirt and black tie under his coat, and charcoal gloves. Phaser also has a single crystal earring hanging from his left ear, similar to the earrings of Reggie MacKenzie and David Rabb from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga.

Due to his space dragon heritage, Phaser is capable of transforming into a space dragon. This form is based on Eastern dragons, with a white serpentine body patterned with black triangular sections and no wings. His tail is tipped with long white hair, and he has long turquoise hair reaching mid-way down his body, pale blue eyes and two horns. After gaining control over himself, he is able to take on a hybrid humanoid form with his human hair colors and earring.

Personality[edit]

Phaser is introduced as a human supremacist. He believes aliens to be unfit to live on Earth and humans to be blessed by being born there, claiming to have created MIK to protect Earth from the taint of aliens. To this end Phaser is willing to resort to drastic authoritarian measures, confining the alien population of Mutsuba Town and the humans who sympathized with them in the Alien Residential Area. These beliefs stem from his desire to protect his brother from the presence of aliens that frightened him, eventually becoming warped into hatred.

Phaser is kinder and more personable while around Tremolo and Mrs. Hottenmeyer, though this does not stop him from imprisoning Tremolo for breaking MIK regulations. Following learning of his heritage and defeat by Yudias Velgear, Phaser apologizes to the aliens of Mutsuba Town, and upon learning the fossilized bones of his ancestors had been drawing aliens to Mutsuba Town in the first place, he accepts the idea that the arrival of aliens will make Earth a better place.

Abilities[edit]

Though human, Phaser is descended from a space dragon, and thus capable of transforming into one. Initially he retains no memory of these transformations and appears to act wildly, but he is finally able to control them and condense his form into a humanoid hybrid during his Rush Duel with Yudias Velgear.

Deck[edit]

Phaser uses an Abysslayer Deck composed of DARK Attribute Sea Serpent Type monsters, including the first Maximum Monsters seen in Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!!. His strategy revolves around card advantage through manipulating the number of monsters in his Graveyard; his Abysslayers gain more beneficial effects when he has no monsters in his Graveyard, while the effects of his Maximum Monsters such as "Abyssal Sea Dragon Abyss Kraken" and "Abyssal Dragon Lord Abyss Poseidra" allow Phaser to return monsters to his Deck to fulfill these conditions.

Duels[edit]

Yudias Velgear 63-64 Lose
