Photon Hand
Photon Hand is a method of taking "Number" monsters from their owners.[1] This power is only obtained to those who hold a "Number" so that they can take away the player they defeated. It was first thought that only Kaito Tenjo had this ability with the help of Dr. Faker's technology, but Astral is also seen using this method in a more detailed manner.[2]
When someone uses Photon Hand, an illuminated hand and arm forms, stretching out and entering the fallen foe. The hand takes away the victim's soul, ages them considerably and leaves them catatonic. Then the user can extract the "Numbers" attached to that soul. Kaito was told by Mr. Heartland that all "Number" holders are evil, so stealing their souls does not matter.[1] Photon Hand doesn't work against someone with a crest.[2]
To those who have physical bodies, this lets the person obtain a "Number" card from a defeated opponent, similar to the way in which Astral does it, but through bitter means: stealing the opponent's soul. So, in Astral's case who has no physical body, he can steal the "Numbers" without taking the defeated opponent's souls.
Kaito claimed that he doesn't know what happens to the souls he takes.[3] Jin claimed that the "Numbers" consume their owner's hearts and drain their souls which would explain why Photon Hand must take the victim's soul.[4] However, this ability can be used even if the target has no "Numbers". In that case, it will just take their soul.[5][6] Despite saying that he does not know where the souls go, Kaito can return the souls but is only willing to do this for those unconnected to the "Numbers".[5][7]
