A Shadow Game (闇のゲーム Yami no Gēmu, literally Game of Darkness or Dark Game) is a competitive activity in the manga that typically involves a Penalty Game for the loser. This is the original incarnation of Shadow Game concept.
A Shadow Game typically relies on a Millennium Item or other magical object to create the nature of the game or its Penalty Game. Seto Kaiba used Solid Vision to replicate the illusions of lifelike monsters created by the Millennium Puzzle for Shadow Games. Some games that were not invoked by any supernatural item were still described as Shadow Games.
History[edit]
In ancient Egypt Shadow Games were magical ceremonies that determined the fate of citizens and Kings. It was written in the Book of the Dead that whoever solves the Millennium Puzzle inherits the Shadow Games, becomes the guardian of right, and passes judgment on evil.[1]
A British team of archaeologists found the Millennium Puzzle in the Valley of the Kings, but suffered mysterious deaths, with the last one uttering "the Shadow Games" in his dying breath.[1]
Yugi Mutou solved the Millennium Puzzle, causing Dark Yugi,[1] the soul of the Pharaoh, Atem, stripped of his memories to emerge,[2] with the ability to take control of Yugi's body for what Yugi would see as moments of memory loss. Dark Yugi played various Shadow Games as means of dealing justice to people who wronged Yugi and his friends.[1]
