Card types

It is unclear how Yokai Monsters are identified in the manga. The Japanese text of "Haunted Shrine" indicates that they are a Type, like Warrior, Dragon etc. The Japanese text of "Long-Tailed Black Horse" indicates that they are an archetype like "Archfiend", "Elemental HERO" etc., though no Yokai Monsters actually have the specified string "妖怪" in their Japanese names. The Japanese text of "Phantasmagoria" indicates they are a type of Monster Card like Toon, Tuner etc. For the purposes of this page, they are categorized as an archetype. In the real world OCG and TCG, Yokai Monsters are not directly connected in a gameplay sense, but are all EARTH Zombie-Type monsters, except for "Goka, the Pyre of Malice" which is a FIRE Zombie-Type monster.

Yokai (ようかい Yōkai) is a Type of Monster Card used by Bastion Misawa in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga. They are based on yōkai creatures from Japanese folklore.

Bastion is the only character to play Yokai monsters, and only in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga. The Yokai Type's core strategy consists of Special Summoning Yokai monsters from the Graveyard, which triggers their effects. Besides effects that allow the user to Special Summon their Yokai from the Graveyard, Yokai monsters and related cards also often have effects that send monsters to the Graveyard (like "Gozuki"), or that benefit from having Yokai monsters in the Graveyard (like "Enma's Judgment").

When the Yokai monsters were released in the OCG/TCG, they were changed to be Zombie monsters, making Yokai a Type exclusive to the manga.

Trivia[edit]

 • In the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga, when Bastion and Chazz Princeton Dueled, Bastion once referred the Type of his Monster Cards as being Zombie instead of Yokai. This occurred only in one scene during the Duel, so it is likely an error made by the editors since the OCG/TCG releases of Bastion's cards are changed to Zombie monsters.
