THUNDER (いかずち Ikazuchi or かみなり Kaminari), known as Lightning in the English Yu-Gi-Oh! manga is one of the original Attributes.

The Attribute exists in the original manga, a number of merchandise released around the time of the Toei anime, Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters Collectible Figure Game, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum. It was not included in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Although they feature a Thunder Type, sharing its name.

Manga[edit]

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, Lightning is one of the seven Attributes in Duel Monsters (Light, Dark, Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, Lightning). Unlike other games, Attribute icons are not visible on the cards and only made known through dialogue and explanations.

Lightning is strengthened by the Mountain.[1] It has an advantage over Water-Attribute monsters in battle. Although the effect this had varies between uses. The Water-Attribute "Great White" lost half of its ATK when it battled the Lightning-Attribute "Oscillo Hero #2".[2] "Suijin" lost 300 ATK when it battled "Summoned Skull".[3]

Monsters capable of Lightning-Attribute attacks can attack monsters that normally out of range if such monsters have been dampened, allowing electricity to be conducted. This includes monsters that are airborne,[4] hidden,[5] or in non-adjacent squares in a Labyrinth Duel.[3] Monsters may be dampened by the effect of "Magic Mist",[4] the Ocean terrain,[5] "Umi", or a flood left from a powerful Water-Attribute attack.[3]

Lightning attacks can be used to attack all monsters in a body of water at once.[5][6]

The cards "Horn of the Unicorn"[5] and "Lightning Blade" can give monsters the ability to use Lightning-Attribute attacks.[6]

"Jellyfish" is capable of absorbing Lightning-Attribute attacks. When "Jellyfish" is played on the surface of a body of water, this will prevent other monsters in the water from being hit by the attack. The absorbed electricity increases the ATK and DEF of "Jellyfish".[5]

Toei-era merchandise[edit]

A number of merchandise released in the era of the Toei anime use the same Attributes as the manga. Either all seven (LIGHT, DARK, FIRE, WATER, WOOD, EARTH, THUNDER) or the five elemental ones (FIRE, WATER, WOOD, EARTH, THUNDER).

Yu-Gi-Oh! Sticker Retsuden uses the five-Attribute subset. Each monster sticker features the five Attributes arranged in a circle with the applicable one highlighting. The THUNDER icon (雷) is highlighted in yellow for THUNDER monsters.

Top Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Gum uses the seven Attributes.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Bandai Sealdass uses the seven Attributes. There is no textual representation of the Attributes on the cards. The top two corners feature circles, whose colors represent the monster's Attribute. Light blue is used for THUNDER.

Capsule Monsters[edit]

THUNDER is one of the Attributes in Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum and the Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters Collectible Figure Game.

In Capsule Monster Coliseum, THUNDER is strong against LIGHT and weak against EARTH.
