Illusion, known as Illusion Magic (
The Dreams Alignment, appearing in a few early video games, is based on this Type and shares its Japanese name.
Overview[edit]
In the manga, the Illusion Type was used by Maximillion J. Pegasus. Members included "Illusionist Faceless Mage", "Dark-Eyes Illusionist", "Relinquished", "Thousand-Eyes Restrict", and an unnamed monster. They were supported by "Black Illusion Ritual". The Type is strong against the Black Magic Type and weak against the Fiend Type. In the Japanese manga, it is usually referred to with the same name ultimately used in the OCG, but was called "Illusionist" (幻想師 Gensōshi) in one occasion. In the English manga, it is referred to as "Illusionists" at one point and "Illusion" at another.
In the 1998 Bandai Carddass game, the Type was assigned to "Dragon Capture Jar" and "Dragon Piper", which were also cards used by Pegasus.
Illusion monsters released in the OCG/TCG have many common motifs:
- All of them incorporate the Eye of Wdjat in their designs.
- Most Effect Monsters share the effect that no monster can be destroyed by battles involving them (including themselves).
- Most originate, or are inspired by, the original manga and the Duel Monsters video game series, which featured this Type and the Dreams Alignment respectively.
- Many of them feature a nearly-monochromatic abstract background.
- Some members and support cards also support a specific other Type(s), e.g. the Chimera cards encourage mixing Illusion monsters with Beasts and Fiends, retrains (such as "Golgoil the Steel Seismic Smasher") will support both Illusion and their original Type, and various cards (both game original and imports from the anime) also support Spellcasters.
