Lists

Illusion (げんそう Gensōma, lit. "Illusion Magic") is a Type of Monster Card.

It was introduced in Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga in December 1997, the Bandai Carddass in 1998, and the OCG in April 2023 in Duelist Nexus.

The Dreams Alignment, appearing in video games, is based on this Type and shares a Japanese name with it.

Overview

In the manga, the Illusion Type was used by Maximillion J. Pegasus. Monsters included "Illusionist Faceless Mage", "Dark-Eyes Illusionist", "Relinquished", "Thousand-Eyes Restrict", and Pegasus's unnamed card. They were supported by "Black Illusion Ritual". The Type is strong against the Black Magic Type and weak against the Fiend Type. In the Japanese manga, it is usually referred to as "Illusion Type" (幻想魔族), but also referred to as "Illusionist" (幻想師) at one point. In the English manga, it is referred to as "Illusionists" at one point and "Illusion" at another.

In the Bandai Carddass, the Type was assigned to "Dragon Capture Jar" and "Dragon Piper", both of which were cards used by Pegasus.

Most Illusion Effect Monsters released in the OCG/TCG share the effect that no monster can be destroyed by battles involving them (including themselves), incorporate the Eye of Wdjat in their artworks, and/or feature a nearly monochromatic abstract background.
