A Dark Synchro Monster is an anime and video game-only monster category that debuted in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's episode 27 and are also present in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 4, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 5, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6. Dark Synchro Monsters are Dark Synchro Summoned by sending to the Graveyard 1 Dark Tuner monster and 1 non-Tuner monster. Besides the Dark Tuner monster, you can use any monster for the Dark Synchro Summon. The non-Tuner monster's Level minus the Dark Tuner monster's Level must be equal to the Dark Synchro Monster's Level (note that the Dark Synchro Monsters have a negative level, something that isn't possible with any other monster in the game). Their Levels start at the opposite side of the card (regular cards start at the right side, they start at the left side).

Dark Synchro Monsters (Japanese: ダークシンクロモンスター Dāku Shinkuro Monsutā) are a type of Monster Card exclusive to the anime, manga, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force video games. They are a counterpart to Synchro Monsters, that either have Negative Levels (in the anime and video games) that are represented by blue orbs with purple stars, or are Level 0 (in the manga). The color of their card frame is a dark grey with a brownish tint. These cards are placed in the Extra Deck. Dark Synchro Monsters are considered entirely different from normal Synchro Monsters.
Dark Synchro Monsters are not simply DARK (Attribute) Synchro Monsters, but are a completely different monster category, although they are similar to Synchro Monsters. The color is opposite of a Synchro Monster, with a dark grey card frame.

Dark Synchro monsters function as a subcategory of Synchro Monsters, and are also Synchro Summoned. When Yusei's "Synchro Destructor" dealt damage twice instead of just once because he destroyed Kalin Kessler's "Hundred Eyes Dragon" with his "Stardust Dragon". During Crow's duel against Greiger, Greiger used "Darksea Rescue" in the summoning of "Dark Flattop". The anime's version of "Darksea Rescue's" effect not only showed that "Dark Flattop" was a Synchro Monster (and reiterating that all Dark Synchro Monsters are Synchro Monsters), but also revealed that Dark Synchro Summoning was a type of Synchro Summoning.
+
Dark Synchro Monsters are Dark Synchro Summoned by sending 1 Dark Tuner monster and 1 non-Tuner monster to the Graveyard. The non-Tuner monster's Level minus the Dark Tuner monster's Level must be equal to the Dark Synchro Monster's negative Level.

However, as stated above, Dark Synchro Monsters are a subcategory of Synchro Monsters, meaning that while a card that involves Synchro Monsters can have an effect on Dark Synchros, they simultaneously act as their own category. This is shown by the Trap Card "Dark Matter", which is activated when a Dark Synchro Monster is destroyed.
+
In the anime, their negative Level stars are left-aligned (like the Ranks of an Xyz Monster), contrasting to the right-aligned positive Levels, while their dark gray card frame contrasts with the white card frame of regular Synchro Monsters.

There are no Dark Synchro Monster in the OCG/TCG. All Dark Synchro Monsters have been released as regular Synchro Monsters in the OCG/TCG; their effects have also either been changed and/or modified except "Zeman the Ape King". Although they don't use Dark Tuner monsters, they still need DARK-Attribute Tuner monsters, except for "Moon Dragon Quilla", to be Synchro Summoned. Also, they still use the respective Types of the non-Tuner monsters like in Anime. E.g. Grady Dark Synchro Summoned "Frozen Fitzgerald" using "Dark Tuner Catastrogue" and the Beast-Type non-tuner "Blizzard Lizard".

The Dark Synchro Monster, "Frozen Fitzgerald", was originally supposed to be released in the OCG/TCG within Crimson Crisis as a mentioned Concept Card. This was, however, called off. It is possible the rest of the Dark Synchros were intended to be released, but, were instead released as Synchro Counterparts.

Lists

In the anime, their negative Level stars are left-aligned (like the Ranks of an Xyz Monster), contrasting to the right-aligned positive Levels, while their dark gray card frame contrasts with the white card frame of regular Synchro Monsters.

Dark Synchro Monsters debuted in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's episode 02727: "A Web of Deceit, Part 1". They are also present in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's manga and the video games Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 4, 5, and 6.

Because of the greater difficulty in Summoning them, Dark Synchro Monsters are generally more powerful than Synchro Monsters of their equivalent Level.

In the TCG/OCG

No monsters are designated as Dark Synchro Monsters in the TCG/OCG. All Dark Synchro Monsters have been released as regular Synchro Monsters, with either regular (but highly specific) Synchro Summoning requirements or a special Summoning condition that simulates a Dark Synchro Summon.

Dark Synchro Monsters from the anime (except "Moon Dragon Quilla") require 1 DARK-Attribute Tuner monster (instead of Dark Tuner monsters, which do not exist in the TCG/OCG) and non-Tuner monsters of the same Type as then non-Tuner monster that was used for their Dark Synchro Summon in anime (e.g. in the anime, Grady Dark Synchro Summoned "Frozen Fitzgerald" using "Blizzard Lizard"; as such, the TCG/OCG card "Frozen Fitzgerald" requires Beast-Type non-Tuner monsters).

The two Dark Synchro Monsters from the manga, "Ultimate God Ultimaya Tzolkin" and "Ultimate Phantasm God Ultimitl Bishbaalkin", are Level 12 Synchro Monsters with an special Summoning condition almost identical to a Dark Synchro Summon, as suggested by being printed as Level 0 monsters. They require sending any 1 Tuner and any 1 non-Tuner with the same Level as each other from the player's field to the Graveyard.

"Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters also have a special Summoning condition where the difference between the Levels of the pseudo-materials is used to perform the Summon, as that is what has to match the Synchro Monster's Level rather than the sum. The first Level 1 Synchro Monsters, something impossible to Synchro Summon, belong to this archetype, and do not care which Level is higher. Higher-Level "Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters require the Tuner to have a higher Level than the non-Tuner.

Neither the manga method nor the "Ursactic" method is treated as a Synchro Summoning; the monsters sent to the GY are not considered Synchro Materials, unlike in the anime and manga. In fact, these 2 groups of monsters are also the only Synchro Monsters that cannot be Synchro Summoned.
