"Purr-plexed!", known as "The Cat in the Garden of Providence" in the Japanese version, is the seventeenth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime. It first aired in Japan on September 26, 2020, and became available in English on June 7, 2022 and will air on June 28, 2022 on 9Go! in Australia.

The one who stole Kaizo's data is Nail Saionji, a boy who oversees all of Goha's Duels and also says the enigmatic word "Providence". In order to retrieve Kaizo's data, Nail must be defeated.

Summary[edit]

Nail is approached by Otes and the Relic.

Nail Saionji types rapidly at a holographic keyboard in a room composed of a spherical screen, his work reflected in his glasses until a robotic voice tells him that it is about time to start. Nail agrees, and he deactivates his screens and reclines back in his massage chair, thinking that his name is Nail, and he is eleven years old; the person who controls providence. It began when he was three years old, when he hacked into the Goha Enterprises servers. Enthralled by the power he wielded, he brought the Goha satellite network crashing down on Goha City. His parents, scared of how he entertained himself, gave him something else to play with, and that was Duel Monsters. Nail didn't find himself surprised to be winning tournaments at this level, remembering defeating a punk Duelist with a purple mohawk without taking any damage himself, and winning the tournament at the age of five as he was praised by the crowd. Goha Enterprises then scouted Nail, and they gave him his Garden; a vast underground space that encompassed the entire city, and his haven was the center, while Nail himself was entrusted with the complete control and regulation of Dueling across the globe. That was the beginning of his providence, but one day alarms blared, and as Nail looked around in shock, the face of Otes appeared on his screen and then the Relic erupted from the ground, projecting Otes. Otes had asked how Nail was, and Nail had complimented his hologram, something Otes had expected a genius programmer and Duelist like Nail to notice. Nail was flattered, but Otes then told him that Dueling would change soon; a new King of Duels would soon appear, before he and the Relic vanished into the earth. The change that Otes spoke of was Yuga Ohdo's Rush Dueling, and though Nail tried again and again to erase them, he utterly failed and his confidence was shattered. But then he finally found him, the person who held the key to everything, Otes, and Yuga Ohdo. The robotic voice then declares that Nail's guests have arrived, and Nail thinks in satisfaction that he should leave everything to providence.

Nail discusses their situation with Yuga.

Romin cries that the door to GastroByte won't open, and Gavin notes that it looks like they've been shut in. Luke asks what's going on, and Nail tells them that it's nice to meet them all, welcoming them to the Garden of Curiosity and introducing himself as Nail Saionji from Goha Enterprises. Mimi gasps in shock and Nail explains that he has guided them here. Yuga asks if Nail was also the one who lured them to Skipjack's ship, but Nail simply holds up a data drive and tells them to look at it; it's the original data of the Drone they call "Kaizo". The Duel-cycle seat containing the remnants of Kaizo's data in Yuga's hand begins to tremble, and Yuga notes that it seems Nail isn't lying. Nail tells them to defeat the Duelists lurking in the Garden of Curiosity if they want to retrieve the data, as only then will they be able to reach him in the central control room that is his haven. Romin comments that Nail is certainly self-important, and Nail adds that if they lose six times, he will regard it as a complete and utter defeat and delete their Duel accounts permanently. Gavin and Romin are floored by this, and Luke curses Nail, though Yuga comments that he knows what Nail is trying to do as a member of Goha Enterprises, but if he really wants to erase Rush Dueling can't he just erase the accounts of anyone who has played them? Nail replies that he cannot, as that is not his providence, and Yuga asks if that means there won't be anymore cheating. Nail comments that Yuga is exactly as he imagined him, as expected of someone Otes chose. Luke, Gavin and Romin are all shocked by the mention of Otes's name and Romin asks if Nail knows him, but Nail simply tells them to have fun in the Garden and retreats down the corridor. Yuga comments that it's interesting, and Luke snaps that it isn't, while Mimi muses that the rumored programming genius at Goha Enterprises really is just a child and she wonders if he's even more important than she is, lamenting that she didn't agree to this. Gavin then calls her name, and Mimi frantically races to catch up with the kids.

The group meet the first Duelist - Kit Schrödinger.

As they walk through several different underground passageways, Luke asks what Nail meant when he said their accounts would be deleted. Gavin admits it's an unexpected development, but then a low "meow" echoes from the passage ahead and everyone comes to a stop. Gavin asks if it's a Duelist, but then the shadow of a cat peeks around the corner - and a boy in a black and white suit with a cat head worn over his own walks around the corner, much to the shock of the kids and the joy of Mimi, who cries that it's a cat. Luke isn't impressed, and Romin states that it's not a cat, while Gavin notes that he's wearing a headpiece. The boy introduces himself as Kit Schrödinger, meowing at the end of his sentence. Romin asks if Kit is the first Duelist, and Kit asks who will be Dueling him. Yuga is eager to Duel, but Luke volunteers instead, claiming he'll pound some manners into anyone trying to permanently delete their accounts. Yuga tells Luke to go ahead, and Kit bids them follow him, as a door opens in the wall beside them and leads into a clean Dueling room. Kit welcomes them, and Luke thanks him (using the same verbal tic as Kit) before both Duelists insert their Decks into their Duel Disks and call "Rush Duel!"

Kit declares his turn and draws, then he Summons "Blue-Eyes White Cat‎" and "Red-Eyes Black Cat‎". Mimi is enchanted by the cats, and Gavin observes that Kit is using a "Cat" Deck. Kit then Sets the remaining three cards in his hand to end his turn, and Luke comments that he can't beat Dragons with a cat.

Luke quickly Summons two high-Level monsters, including "Multistrike Dragon Dragias".

He declares his turn and draws "Multistrike Dragon Dragias", then he Summons "Draco the Tiny", "Dragon Bat", and "Sportsdragon Slugger". He Tributes "Draco the Tiny" to Tribute Summon "Dragon Knight of Darkness", then he Tributes "Dragon Bat" and "Sportsdragon Slugger", chanting "Right now, in my galaxy, seven supernovas unleash a gamma-ray burst! Now, come out! Multistrike Dragon Dragias!" Everyone else cheers that it's here, and Luke sends the top card of his Deck to his Graveyard to activate the effect of "Dragias", sending "Phoenix Dragon" to his Graveyard. He orders "Drgaears" to attack "Black Cat", and "Dragias" lunges forwards.

Luke begins worrying over the situation.

But Kit activates a Trap Card, "Lost Cat", forcing Luke to pick his favorite from monsters, Spells or Traps, much to Luke's shock. Kit explains that Luke will have to send the top card of his Deck to the Graveyard, and if he guesses its card type correctly then the attack will go through, but if he's wrong the attack will be negated and he'll take 300 damage. As Kit urges Luke to pick, Romin admits that she's worried, though Yuga think it will be fine and Gavin reassures them that Luke isn't the type to worry. But poor Luke is clearly stressing out over the situation, much to Gavin's shock, and Romin screams that she's very worried. Kit asks what's wrong, but Luke has just remembered what was worrying him earlier; if Yuga does indeed become the King of Duels, would he hand the title over to Luke? He wonders what on earth he's doing; he's Dueling a cat, and where has the old him gone? Gavin asks what's wrong as Romin notes that this isn't the usual Luke, and Yuga wonders what Luke is worried about. Kit stretches like a cat, asking if Luke isn't pawsitive yet, and Luke shakes his head, thinking that he needs to focus on the Duel and choosing monster.

Luke is blasted back by his failure to choose his card type correctly.

He draws the card, telling it to come, but he's drawn a Spell, "Dragonic Pressure", and is blown off his feet by the choice, landing hard on his back. Kit comments that it's too bad that it was a Spell, and the attack of "Dragias" is nyagated (a pun on the Japanese onomatopoeia for a cat's meow) and Luke takes 300 damage. A bolt of lightning strikes Luke, reducing him to 3700 LP as Yuga cries his name in shock and Gavin begs him to endure it. Luke struggles to his feet as he sends "Dragonic Pressure" to his Graveyard and he admits that was quite a hit, and Kit is pretty good for a cat, but the Duel has only just begun. He orders "Dragon Knight of Darkness" to attack "Black Cat", but Kit activates another "Lost Cat", asking which Luke will choose this time. Luke notes in frustration that he should have had the advantage when "Dragias" attacked earlier, but somehow he's back at square one again. Kit agrees, claiming that it's said there are many possibilities that can exist in this world. Luke asks what Kit means, and Kit points out that they could both win or lose this Duel. Yuga realizes that Kit is talking about Schrödinger's Cat and he urges Luke not to be fooled. Luke angrily asks what Kit means by winning and losing, as Luke only thinks of winning. But then a cat's tail taps his shoulder and points over to Luke himself crying that he knew he couldn't become King after all. Luke then feels himself falling into an abyss with Yuga waving him goodbye above it, and he snaps out of his funk and yells that there's no way that will happen, before choosing monster again.

He draws, but it's the "Dragon's Return" Spell, and he's blasted onto his back again. Kit reminds him that the attack of "Dragon Knight of Darkness" will be negated again and Luke will take 300 damage, reducing him to 3400 LP. Luke ends his turn with a meow of his own, and Gavin laments that Luke's attacks were completely blocked. Mimi gasps that the cat is messing with him, while Romin worries that Luke is so ragged and wobbly.

Kit Summons three "Cat" monsters.

Kit declares his turn as a catlike aura spreads above him and the flailing Luke and he draws five cards. Smiling at his draw, he Tributes "Black Cat" and "White Cat" to Tribute Summon "Odd-Eyes Twin Tail Cat‎", before Summoning another "Red-Eyes Black Cat" and "Blue-Eyes White Cat". Gavin cries that Luke is still wobbling around as Kit activates the Spell he had Set, "Cat's Eye", forcing Luke to guess the card type of the top card of his Deck again, and if he guesses wrong, then all of Kit's monsters will be able to attack directly this turn. Mimi and Gavin both gasp in shock, and Romin calls it dirty as Yuga calls Luke's name. Luke wonders why he's so worried in the first place; if this keeps up, then the title of King of Duels will be... He sees himself both on a throne and then defeated, and once again falling into the abyss as Yuga bids him goodbye. Luke screams in frustration, and Gavin admits that this is the first time he's seen Luke so worried about something, an assessment Romin agrees with. Mimi tells them to look; Luke is scratching his head frantically and Gavin gasps he's in danger. Kit stretches out again, asking Luke if he's ready yet. Luke snaps out of his funk and reaches with shaking fingers for his Duel Disk as he begins to declare Spell, but Kit finishes his sentence for him and Luke withdraws his hand and begins to declare Trap, but when Kit once again finishes Luke's sentence for him, Luke finally declares monster again and draws the card; but it's a Trap, "Dragon Encounter". Luke is flung away and Kit triumphantly declares that he's wrong. Gavin laments that Luke got it wrong again as Luke crashes to the ground, and Romin asks what he's doing. Kit then activates the "Nyanderful Trap" effect of "Odd-Eyes Twin Tail Cat" since he controls both "Black Cat" and "White Cat", allowing him to add a Trap Card from his Graveyard to his hand. The eyes of all of his "Cats" glow as he retrieves "Lost Cat" from his Graveyard, then Sets both cards in his hand and declares his Battle Phase, noting that due to "Cat's Eye" he can attack directly with "Redy-Eyes Black Cat". It claws Luke with a "cat punch" as Mimi observes, reducing him to 2900 LP and Yuga comments that it was a really powerful punch. "Blue-Eyes White Cat" then attacks directly with, as Romin observes, a "cat kick" that reduces poor Luke to 2300 LP, which Gavin comments was quite painful. Then "Odd-Eyes Twin Tail Cat" attacks directly, climbing up Luke's leg and latching onto his arm as it attacks with "Paradox Stamp", first stamping on Luke's hand and then kicking off his face, reducing him to 100 LP. Romin gasps that it's so one-sided and Gavin laments that Luke only has 100 LP left as Yuga clenches his teeth. Kit declares that there are countless possibilities in this world, and it seems that one of them is about to be revealed; Luke's utter defeat. He ends his turn.

Luke finally snaps out of his worries.

Luke struggles up, lethargically drawing five cards, but as he looks at his hand he thinks that he can't. Gavin finally realizes what Luke is worrying about; the matter he mentioned earlier that day. Romin asks what Gavin means, and Gavin calls out to Luke, who takes a while to realize that Gavin means him, and Gavin asks fi Luke is worrying about the Throne of the King. Luke frantically asks what Gavin is talking about, claiming that he totally wasn't worrying about whether or not he'd get the Throne of the King. Romin comments that she knew it, and Gavin suggests he just listen to what Yuga has to say. Yuga asks what Luke is talking about, and Luke claims he gets it, eventually sheepishly asking if Yuga would give him the Throne of the King if he became the King of Duels. As Kit yawns, Yuga comments that Luke is his friend, so of course... Luke eagerly asks if Yuga would, but Yuga then finishes his sentence, stating that of course he wouldn't. Poor Luke is utterly shattered by the news, once again seeing himself falling into the abyss, but then Yuga points out that anyone can become King as countless possibilities exist, and one of those is that Luke will become the King. Luke repeats the words to himself, seeing himself ascending to the throne, and he roars in desire. Kit casually asks if he's finished yet, but Luke tells him to shut up, claiming that he can see it now; his "daor" ("road" spelled backwards, as Luke isn't the best with English), his vision where he becomes King. He Summons the monster of the future King, "Dragorite", then sends the top card of his Deck to the Graveyard to activate the effect of "Dragias", explaining that if "Dragias" destroys another monster by battle this turn it will be allowed to attack for a second time. Romin worries about what will happen if Kit activates "Lost Cat" again, and Gavin notes that the 300 effect damage would defeat Luke. But Luke vows that it won't be the same this time, because now he has decided that he can become King. He Tributes "Dragorite" and "Dragon Knight of Darkness" to Tribute Summon, chanting "Right now, in my universe, a hole has opened up! Bore through time and space until you can see the daor on the other side! Come on out! Piercing Dragon Bunker Strike!"

Luke with both "Piercing Dragon Bunker Strike" and "Multistrike Dragon Dragias".

Kit is shocked by the "Thrustriking Dragon", and Luke sends the top card of his Deck to the Graveyard ("Vengeful Dragon's Counterattack") to activate the effect of "Bunker Strike", allowing him to draw cards equal to the number of monsters Kit controls and then return the same number to the top of his Deck in any order. Kit gasps that he nyan't believe it, and Luke declares that this is "Bunker Strike's" "Future Mining", so he draws three cards - "Dragonic Slayer", "Dragon's Inferno", and "Dragon's Fortitude" and declares that results will be born from his foresight as he returns the cards to the top of his Deck in the same order he drew them, declaring that now he knows exactly what's in his Deck. He was relying on luck before, but now he'll grasp his destiny with his own hands. Kit panics, asking what Luke just said and Gavin is impressed that Luke is using such an intricate strategy, though Romin isn't sure that Luke gets it. But Luke grins, and Yuga gives him the thumbs up, commenting that's Luke for them. Luke declares his Battle Phase, ordering "Dragias" to attack "Black Cat". As "Dragias" flies forwards towards the terrified "Black Cat", Luke declares that his daor to becoming King is a one-way street, and "Dragias" blasts "Black Cat" with its green energy orbs, destroying it and reducing Kit to 2000 LP. Since "Dragias" destroyed a monster in battle, it can attack again, much to Kit's horror, so it attacks "White Cat" this time, blasting the fiery orbs at "White Cat" and destroying it, reducing Kit to 100 LP himself. Luke then orders "Piercing Dragon Bunker Strike" to attack "Odd-Eyes Twin Tail Cat", and as it lunges forwards, Kit decides to bet on the last possibility, activating "Lost Cat". Luke claims that it's useless, as he's deciding his own destiny, so Kit tells him to pick his card, a decision Luke calls foolish, since he returned his cards to the top of his Deck earlier, the top card is...and he's clean forgotten what cards he returned, much to Gavin, Mimi and Romin's exasperation, though Yuga cheerfully points out that's Luke for them. Luke's head swims as he recalls the three cards, "Dragonic Slayer", "Dragon's Inferno", and "Dragon's Fortitude", though he thinks "Dragon's Fortitude" might have been on the top and "Dragonic Slayer" on the bottom, no, that's not it, now what was in the middle...? Kit laughs triumphantly that the tables have turned, but Luke vows that he won't hesitate any further and he declares that it's a monster as he draws his card...

Luke successfully guesses monster as he draws "Dragonic Slayer".

It's "Dragonic Slayer", and Luke asks Kit how he likes that as "Lost Cat" burns away. Kit screams that he can't believe it, running to a slot in the wall as a scratching mat emerges and scratching it frantically, crying that he doesn't want this kind of destiny. Luke orders the "Drill Extermination: Thrust Strike" attack of "Bunker Strike", and it destroys "Odd-Eyes Twin Tail Cat" and throws Kit across the room, reducing his LP to zero. Luke asks how that is as Mimi applauds and Romin comments that he did it after all, while Gavin calls his victory stunning. Yuga comments that Luke's daor certainly is different. Kit curls into a ball, apologizing to Nail as the floor opens up beneath him, dropping him into the darkness with a final desperate meow. Mimi is horrified at the disposal of the cat, and Romin asks how Nail could do such a thing. Luke snaps that he doesn't like this, and he yells at Nail to let the future King come up and beat him already, challenging him to a Duel.

Nail sends everyone outside to go home for the day.

But Nail tells them that's all for today, much to everyone's surprise. The lights in the room go out, and then a spotlight snaps on them as Mimi asks what's going on. The flor they're standing on rushes forwards towards a square of orange light...and then they emerge on the river bank, much to Mimi's shock, with a Goha Enterprises Drone flying overhead. Nail tells them that it's already dark, and Dueling is all well and good, but they should go home and do their homework. Romin is shocked that Nail can do something like this, and Gavin admits that was a scary situation. Yuga reassures them that they'll definitely come out on top, after all, Luke was able to find his own daor. Luke replies that of course he did, and he points at a blue light in the sky, telling them that's his daor; the star of the King of Duels. Everyone is enchanted by it, but then the "star" falls, much to Luke's dismay, and as he leaps in the air and begs it not to fall, Yuga once again comments that's Luke for them.

Trivia[edit]

  • When Luke regains his desire to become the King of Duels, he is depicted as pointing his right index finger into the sky from a bird's-eye view, similarly to how Jack Atlas is framed when he declares his signature catchphrase of "There is only one King, and that is me!" ("Who's Master of Faster? Who rules the Duel? That's right, it's me! Jack Atlas!" in the dub).
  • When Nail remembers one of his victories during Duel Monsters Tournaments, a Punk-looking opponent he faced closely resembles the Duel Gang members.
