Dark Synchro Monsters (Japanese: ダークシンクロモンスター Dāku Shinkuro Monsutā) are a type of Monster Card exclusive to the anime, manga, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force video games. They are a counterpart to Synchro Monsters, that either have Negative Levels (in the anime and video games) that are represented by blue orbs with purple stars, or are Level 0 (in the manga). The color of their card frame is a dark grey with a brownish tint. These cards are placed in the Extra Deck. Dark Synchro Monsters are considered entirely different from normal Synchro Monsters.
Dark Synchro Monsters are Dark Synchro Summoned by sending 1 Dark Tuner monster and 1 non-Tuner monster to the Graveyard. The non-Tuner monster's Level minus the Dark Tuner monster's Level must be equal to the Dark Synchro Monster's negative Level.
In the anime, their negative Level stars are left-aligned (like the Ranks of an Xyz Monster), contrasting to the right-aligned positive Levels, while their dark gray card frame contrasts with the white card frame of regular Synchro Monsters.
Dark Synchro Monsters debuted in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's episode A Web of Deceit, Part 1". They are also present in the 27: "Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's manga and the video games Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 4, 5, and 6.
Because of the greater difficulty in Summoning them, Dark Synchro Monsters are generally more powerful than Synchro Monsters of their equivalent Level.
In the OCG/TCG[edit]
No monsters are designated as Dark Synchro Monsters in the OCG/TCG. All Dark Synchro Monsters have been released as regular Synchro Monsters, with either regular (but highly specific) Synchro Summoning requirements or a special Summoning condition that simulates a Dark Synchro Summon.
Dark Synchro Monsters from the anime (except "Moon Dragon Quilla") require 1 DARK-Attribute Tuner monster (instead of Dark Tuner monsters, which do not exist in the OCG/TCG) and non-Tuner monsters of the same Type as then non-Tuner monster that was used for their Dark Synchro Summon in anime (e.g. in the anime, Grady Dark Synchro Summoned "Frozen Fitzgerald" using "Blizzard Lizard"; as such, the OCG/TCG card "Frozen Fitzgerald" requires Beast-Type non-Tuner monsters).
The two Dark Synchro Monsters from the manga, "Ultimate God Ultimaya Tzolkin" and "Ultimate Phantasm God Ultimitl Bishbaalkin", are Level 12 Synchro Monsters with a Special Summoning condition almost identical to a Dark Synchro Summon, as suggested by being printed as Level 0 monsters. They require sending any 1 Tuner and any 1 non-Tuner with the same Level as each other from the player's field to the Graveyard.
"Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters also have a special Summoning condition where the difference between the Levels of the pseudo-materials is used to perform the Summon, as that is what has to match the Synchro Monster's Level rather than the sum. The first Level 1 Synchro Monsters, something impossible to Synchro Summon, belong to this archetype, and do not care which Level is higher. Higher-Level "Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters require the Tuner to have a higher Level than the non-Tuner.
Neither the manga method nor the "Ursactic" method is treated as a Synchro Summoning; the monsters sent to the GY are not considered Synchro Materials, unlike in the anime and manga. In fact, these 2 groups of monsters are also the only Synchro Monsters that cannot be Synchro Summoned.
