Synchro Materials
To be Summoned, Synchro Monsters require Tuner Monsters to be face-up on your Field. When the total Level of the Tuner monster and any other face-up monsters on your Field exactly matches the Level of the Synchro Monster you wish to Summon (no more or less), by sending them to the Graveyard, you can "Synchro Summon" the Synchro monster. Some Synchro Monsters require a specific "Tuner Monster" in order to be Synchro Summoned (such as "Junk Synchron" for "Junk Warrior") or monsters of a particular Type or Attribute as Material Monsters, but many do not, so they can be in just about any Extra Deck.

Synchro Materials are the requisite monsters needed to Synchro Summon the Synchro Monster. Each Synchro Monster lists its required Synchro Materials in the first line of its card text.

Because Synchro Monsters belong in the Extra Deck, they return there whenever they would be returned to the hand or Main Deck, like Fusion Monsters before.<font class=plainlinks>ref</font> Also, like Fusion Monsters, they cannot be Special Summoned from the Graveyard if they were not properly Synchro Summoned first.

Synchro Summoning
Synchro Summon

A Synchro Summon is the act of Summoning a Synchro Monster from the Extra Deck using a Tuner monster with additional non-Tuner monsters. During the Main Phase 1 or 2, the turn player can Synchro Summon a Synchro Monster from the Extra Deck by sending monsters they control to the Graveyard (at least 1 Tuner and 1 or more non-Tuner monsters), provided the total Level of those monsters matches exactly the Level of that Synchro Monster.

Some players have begun to use the term 'Synchronize,' 'Sync,' or 'Tune/Tuning' to then list which Tuner Monster and non-Tuner monsters will be sent to the Graveyard when they perform a Synchro Summon and summoning a Synchro Monster.

There are currently no Aqua or Fish-Type Synchro Monsters in TCG or OCG. However, Konami has released Synchro Monsters for certain Archetypes of monsters, including the "Aliens", "Six Samurai", "Iron Chain", "XX-Sabers", and "Blackwing" monsters.

A very small number of Synchro Monsters cannot be Synchro Summoned, and lack the Synchro Material line on their card text. Instead, they each describe a separate Special Summoning procedure in their Summoning conditions. Such Summoning conditions can be compared to Contact Fusion, which involve Special Summoning Fusion Monsters with their Summoning conditions rather than by Fusion Summoning.

Strategically speaking, Synchro Monsters allow for a large amount of rapid power to be summoned to the field with relative ease and speed. Most of them have very potent effects in addition to their ease in summoning. They do not necessarily always have card advantage over Fusion Monsters, because a player might use up as many cards getting all of the Material Monsters on the field to perform a Synchro summon in one turn, but they have the advantage of increased flexibility and speed over Fusion Monsters due to the fact that many of them have very inspecific requirements for them to be summoned, so a player with a Tuner monster and a non-Tuner monster on the field will always have one or more options for summoning, especially if card effects that allow Levels to be changed are used.

"Black-Winged Assault Dragon" is the only Synchro Monster that can both be Synchro Summoned and be Special Summoned by a procedure specified in its Summoning condition.

Trivia
* Several Warrior-Type Synchro Monsters, especially the ones used by Yusei in the Anime, actually resemble other Types of monsters than the ones printed on the cards ("Junk Warrior", "Drill Warrior" and "Turbo Warrior" all look like Machine-Type, while "Nitro Warrior" looks like a Fiend-Type).
+
* In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Jakob stated that mankind's excessive use of Synchro Monsters caused Ener-D to spin faster, producing more energy and thus accelerating human evolution.

* Machine-Type monsters are currently the most diverse monsters by Level, as they have Synchro Monsters that are Levels: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12; thanks to the addition of "Formula Synchron" and "T.G. Halberd Cannon" meaning that only a Level 11 Synchro Monster is needed to complete the entire spectrum of Synchro Summoning (as you cannot Synchro Summon a Level one Synchro Monster without the help of card effects).
+
* "Flower Cardian Lightflare" has the highest ATK of all Synchro Monsters, with 5000 ATK. "Superheavy Samurai Steam Train King" has the highest DEF of all Synchro Monsters, with 4800 DEF.

* In anime, Synchro Monsters have the power to manipulate Ener-D, allowing humans to accelerate their evolution. It was a vital part of the plot of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and the series antagonists' intentions. However, it was never explained exactly how Synchro Monsters obtained this ability. In episode 143 Aporia stated that synchro monsters were created by accident, hinting that Ener-d itself is the creator of Synchro monsters, if that was the case, it would also explain why Synchro monsters were the keys to activate the Old Ener-D's control towers.
+
* "Sea Dragon Lord Gishilnodon" is the only Synchro Monster that specifies the Level of the non-Tuner monster required for its Synchro Summon.

*Similar to how Synchro monsters replaced Ritual and Fusion monsters when Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's started, Xyz monsters have slowly started replacing Synchro monsters since Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL started. New Booster Packs, Starter Decks, and Duel Terminals now focus on Xyz monsters and included almost no more Synchro monsters, and no Synchro monsters have appear in the Zexal anime yet.
+
* The illegal cards "Grizzly, the Red Star Beast" and "Stardust Divinity" are the only Match winner Synchro Monsters.
** In the preview of Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL - Episode 001, "Iron Chain Dragon" was shown in a minor duel, but was then replaced by non-Synchro monster.

* In the Arabic dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Synchro Monsters were translated as "وحوش الدمج" "wohoush eldamj", and Tuners "modmej" which is the literal Arabic translation of Fusion Monsters. In Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, "wohoush eldamj" was reverted to Fusion Monsters, and Synchro Monsters and Tuners were left untranslated.

Psychic End Punisher
"Psychic End Punisher", a Synchro Monster.

Synchro Monsters (Japanese: シンクロモンスター Shinkuro Monsutā, abbreviated シンクロモンスター in card text since Duelist Alliance) are a type of monsters that must be Synchro Summoned. Their card frame is colored in white.

Characteristics[edit]

Synchro Monsters are Extra Deck monsters:

Synchro Materials[edit]

Synchro Materials are the requisite monsters needed to Synchro Summon the Synchro Monster. Each Synchro Monster lists its required Synchro Materials in the first line of its card text.

Synchro Summoning[edit]

Synchro Summon is the act of Summoning a Synchro Monster from the Extra Deck using a Tuner monster with additional non-Tuner monsters.

Alternate Summoning Condition[edit]

A very small number of Synchro Monsters cannot be Synchro Summoned, and lack the Synchro Material line on their card text. Instead, they each describe a separate Special Summoning procedure in their Summoning conditions. Such Summoning conditions can be compared to Contact Fusion, which involve Special Summoning Fusion Monsters with their Summoning conditions rather than by Fusion Summoning.

"Black-Winged Assault Dragon" is the only Synchro Monster that can both be Synchro Summoned and be Special Summoned by a procedure specified in its Summoning condition.
