Magic Types diagram in the Japanese and English versions

Magic ( Ma) is a Type or group of Types in Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga series and in Dungeon Dice Monsters.

The English manga refers to "Magic Types" as "Magic Users" or mentions other concepts in its place.

In Duel Monsters, It is divided into four Types; Black Magic, White Magic, Fiend (Demon Magic), and Illusion (Illusion Magic).

In Duel Monsters, Card texts also mention Magician (じゅつ Majutsushi or 魔術師マジシャン Majishan), not suffixed with the word "Type", which might be considered to be the same thing. It also has a subdivision, Black Magician. The English manga usually mentions the Spellcaster Type in place of both.

In Dungeon Dice Monsters, Magic-Type monsters are color-coded white.

Mentions as "Magic Type"

Sugoroku Mutou mentioned "Magic Types" (魔族) as an entity distinct from "monsters" that players were able to Summon. And explained that it comprises four Types, each of which is strong against one of the others. (The compound "Magic Types" is replaced with "Magic User" in the English version.)[1] Despite the distinction from "monster", cards belonging to these Types are described as monsters in later appearances.

Dark Yugi explained that only ground units may pass through the Labyrinth and listed a number of Types, whose monsters are typically fit that criteria, including Warrior, Knight, Magic and Beast. (In the English manga, he instead mentions Warrior, Beast-Warrior, and Spellcaster.)[2]

The card "Flames of the Archfiend" requires a Magic-Type monster to activate. "Archfiend of Gilfer" qualifies as such a monster. (The English manga instead says that it requires an "Archfiend" monster.)[3]

Mentions as "Magician"

The following cards are considered to be Magicians (魔術師), evidenced by characters using them with Magician support cards.

The following cards require a Magician to use:

In the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, all of the above, with the exception of "Diffusion Wave-Motion", "Dimension Magic" and "Magician's Circle", retained their manga text, including mentions of the word "Magician".

Other games

The Type does not exist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game or Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. However its sub-Types, Fiend (Demon Magic) and Illusion (Illusion Magic), do exist and the remainder of its representation is largely replaced with the Spellcaster Type.

The four sub-Types also exist in the Bandai Yu-Gi-Oh! Carddass along with a fifth Type; Dragon Magic.
