To pick up a card is to take a card from your Deck.
Picked-up cards are still considered to be in the Deck, and will be treated as such, until sent to the Graveyard, added to the hand, banished etc.
To prevent cheating, when an effect requires you to pick up a card of a specific type from your Deck, then you must reveal the cards to your opponent.
You do not lose the duel if you have no card in your Deck when required to pick up a card from it.
