Battle damage (Japanese: せんとうダメージ sentō damēji) is the damage inflicted to a player's LP from battle. Both words were initially capitalized, but since Abyss Rising have been consistently lowercase.

In a battle, a monster inflicts battle damage in the damage calculation part of the Damage Step. Whether or not battle damage is inflicted, and how much of it is inflicted, is determined in damage calculation.

Interactions with effects[edit]

Card effects can change the amount and the recipient of battle damage at the moment it is inflicted. When multiple card effects that modify battle damage are applied, they are considered in the following order.[1]

  1. Inflict double battle damage (e.g. "Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon")
  2. Both players take battle damage (e.g. "Double-Edged Sword")
  3. Battle damage you take is also inflicted to your opponent, you/your opponent takes battle damage instead (e.g. "Lyrilusc - Recital Starling" and "Amazoness Swords Woman")
    • After one of these effects is applied to the battle damage, other similar effects are not applied to that same battle damage.[1][2]
  4. Battle damage is treated as effect damage (e.g. "Gravekeeper's Vassal")
  5. Gain LP equal to the battle damage instead (e.g. "Muscle Medic")
  6. Battle damage becomes 0 (e.g. "Blackwing Armor Master")
  7. Battle damage becomes halved (e.g. "Half Unbreak")
    • Even if multiple of these effects are applied, the battle damage still becomes halved, not quartered.[3]
  8. Battle damage becomes doubled (e.g. "Action Magic - Full Turn")
    • Even if multiple of these effects are applied, the battle damage still becomes doubled, not quadrupled.[4]
  9. Battle damage becomes a fixed value (e.g. "Temple of the Mind's Eye")
  10. Do not take battle damage that is more/less than or equal to a fixed value (e.g. "Performage Trapeze Magician")
