An effect (こう kōka) or card effect is card text which appears on Monster Cards (except for Normal Monsters, which instead have flavor text or a lore, which is italicized when printed in a language which uses the Latin alphabet), Spell Cards, and Trap Cards; and which is not a condition, cost, or material. Effects modify gameplay in various ways.

While Normal Monsters only have flavor text, Normal Pendulum Monsters may have a Pendulum Effect in addition to their flavor text.

Trivia

  • In the anime (both original Japanese and dubbed), effects are often called "special abilities" (tokushū nōryoku). In the manga, they are referred to as both "effects" and "special abilities"; they are also very rarely referred to as "powers".
    • Jaden Yuki for the first season referred to his Elemental Hero's abilities as "Super Powers".
