Mechanics
To Summon a monster is to place a Monster Card from a location outside of a Monster Zone (e.g. the hand or the Extra Deck) into a Monster Zone. Once Summoned, a monster will be able to use its monster effects (if it is face-up) and battle.
When a player conducts a Summon, the player conducting that Summon will choose an appropriate Monster Zone and place the monster in that Zone, unless a card effect specifies otherwise.
Monsters are always Summoned face-up, unless the Summon is performed by a card effect that Special Summons face-down.
Normal Summon
Normal Summon is a method of Summoning. A player can Normal Summon a monster from their hand during their Main Phase. If the player Normal Summons a high-Level monster, they will have to perform a Tribute Summon (a subcategory of Normal Summons) and Tribute monsters during the Normal Summon.
A player can only perform 1 Normal Summon/Set per turn, even if that Summon is negated.
Flip Summon
Flip Summon is a method of Summoning. A player can Flip Summon a monster on the field by flipping a face-down monster to face-up during their Main Phase.
A player can perform an unlimited number of Flip Summons per turn.
Special Summon
Special Summon is a method of Summoning. It encompasses multiple different forms of Summons, some performed by game mechanics and some by card effects, and includes many different subcategories of defined Summoning procedures. Forms of Special Summoning include:
- Special Summoning by a Special Summon Monster's Summoning conditions
- Fusion Summon
- Ritual Summon
- Synchro Summon
- Xyz Summon
- Pendulum Summon
- Link Summon
- Maximum Summon (Rush Duel only)
A player can perform an unlimited number of Special Summons per turn.

Unofficial Summoning mechanics
In the anime, manga, and video games, there are many other forms of Summoning that are not official terminology in the TCG/OCG. When cards that utilize one of these Summoning methods, or were exclusively Summoned using one of them, in the anime or manga are released in real life, they usually have effects or clauses that reference the designated Summoning method built into them.
These include the following:
