There are also other terms referring to ways of Summoning monsters, but these are not official names in the ''TCG''/''OCG'', and as such are never mentioned in functional card text. These names come from anime, manga, video games, [[Normal Monster]]s' card text, and vernacular used by players.

Summon

A Summon (しょうかん Shōkan) is an action which places a monster onto a Monster Zone. Summoning a monster can take place as a game mechanic, or as a part of a card effect.

Mechanics

To Summon a monster is to place a Monster Card from a location outside of a Monster Zone (e.g. the hand or the Extra Deck) into a Monster Zone. Once Summoned, a monster will be able to use its monster effects (if it is face-up) and battle.

When a player conducts a Summon, the player conducting that Summon will choose an appropriate Monster Zone and place the monster in that Zone, unless a card effect specifies otherwise.

Monsters are always Summoned face-up, unless the Summon is performed by a card effect that Special Summons face-down.

Normal Summon

Normal Summon is a method of Summoning. A player can Normal Summon a monster from their hand during their Main Phase. If the player Normal Summons a high-Level monster, they will have to perform a Tribute Summon (a subcategory of Normal Summons) and Tribute monsters during the Normal Summon.

A player can only perform 1 Normal Summon/Set per turn, even if that Summon is negated.

Flip Summon

Flip Summon is a method of Summoning. A player can Flip Summon a monster on the field by flipping a face-down monster to face-up during their Main Phase.

A player can perform an unlimited number of Flip Summons per turn.

Special Summon

Unofficial Summoning mechanics

These include the following:
