"Kelbek", "Agido", and "Zolga" being Tributed for the Tribute Summon of "Obelisk the Tormentor" in the artwork of "Soul Crossing"

A Tribute Summon (Japanese: アドバンスしょうかん Adobansu Shōkan "Advance Summon") is a form of Normal Summoning a Level 5 or higher monster by Tributing another monster(s) the player controls. Level 5 and 6 monsters require one Tribute, while Level 7 and higher require two Tributes.

Tributing a monster for a Tribute Summon is part of a Summoning condition. Therefore, if the Tribute Summon is negated, the Tributed monster(s) will not return to the field.

Trivia

  • As seen in Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, Tribute Summoning had largely fallen out of practice thanks to Xyz, Fusion and Synchro being much quicker to pull out powerful monsters.
    • Bronk had to explain to Tori how Shark was able to summon Jawsman without it being an Xyz Summon.
