A monster effect is a card effect produced by a Monster Card. Under normal circumstances, only Effect Monsters can produce monster effects.
Types of monster effect
There are several distinct types of monster effect. All monster effects that start a Chain except Quick Effects are Spell Speed 1.
- Flip Effect: Activates when the monster is flipped face-up (even in the Damage Step). Can be either optional or compulsory.
- Ignition Effect: Optional effect that can be activated in any open game state during the Main Phase (some cards have Ignition Effects that can be activated during other Phases).
- Trigger Effect: Have a specific timing that must be met before they can be activated. Can be either optional or non-optional.
- Quick Effect: Spell Speed 2. May or may not have a specific timing. Can be either optional or non-optional.
- Continuous Effect: Does not start a Chain, and remains in effect as long as the monster is face-up on the field.
- Unclassified Effect: Other types of monster effects that do not start a Chain.
Non-Effect Monsters activating monster effects
Some cards can give non-Effect Monsters (currently only for Xyz Monsters) an effect. Those cards will make any cards that only affect Effect Monsters (rather than monster effects) unable to affect or target non-Effect Monsters using them, such as "Effect Veiler", "Breakthrough Skill", and "Fiendish Chain".
