Original ATK (もともとこうげきりょく Motomoto no Kōgekiryoku) and original DEF (もともとしゅりょく Motomoto no Shubiryoku) refer to the ATK and DEF values of a Monster Card before any card effects alter the value. They are the ATK and DEF values listed on the card.

Token Monsters[edit]

The original ATK and DEF of a Token Monster are the ATK and DEF listed in the card text of the effect that Special Summoned it.[1][2] If the card that Special Summoned the Token Monster lists its ATK/DEF as "?" (e.g. an "Emissary of Darkness Token" Special Summoned by "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness"), its original ATK/DEF is treated as ? (just like monsters whose printed ATK/DEF is ?).[2]

If the card that Special Summoned the Token does not specify its original ATK and DEF in the standard format (e.g. a "Clone Token" Special Summoned by "Cloning"), it does not have any original ATK or DEF,[3][4] even if the effect states that it has the same original ATK and DEF as another card.[5]

Trap Monsters[edit]

The original ATK and DEF of a Trap Monster are the ATK and DEF listed in the card text of the effect that Special Summoned it.[2]

?[edit]

Some monsters have a printed ATK or DEF of ?.

These cards usually have effects that change their own original ATK/DEF to a particular value. For example, "Chimeratech Overdragon" (whose printed ATK/DEF is ?/?) has an effect that makes its original ATK and DEF equal to the number of Fusion Materials used for its Fusion Summon multiplied by 800.

While a monster with ? ATK/DEF is on the field, if their original ATK/DEF has not been changed by a card effect, its original ATK/DEF defaults to 0. For example, "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" has ? ATK and DEF but no effect to change its own ATK or DEF, so they will be treated as 0 on the field by default. Likewise, for the effect of "Number 103: Ragnazero", if a monster with ? ATK has not had its original ATK changed by a card effect, its ATK is only considered different from its original ATK if it does not have 0 ATK.[6]

While a monster with ? ATK/DEF is not on the field, its original ATK/DEF is not a numeric value—? ATK/DEF is not greater than or less than any value. For example, monsters in the hand with ? ATK cannot be destroyed by either "Crush Card Virus" or "Deck Devastation Virus"; and monsters in the Deck with ? ATK cannot be added to the hand by "Piri Reis Map". However, they can be affected by cards that specifically support cards with ? ATK, such as "Catoblepas and the Witch of Fate".

If the original ATK/DEF of a card with ? ATK/DEF that is not on the field needs to be used as a number (e.g. when summing the total ATK of monsters including a monster with ? ATK), its ATK is treated as 0. For example, if "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is Tribute Summoned by Tributing monsters including a monster with ? ATK/DEF after applying the effect of "Ancient Chant", the ATK/DEF of the monster with ? ATK/DEF will be treated as 0 when calculating the Tributed monsters' total ATK/DEF.[7]

Changing original ATK/DEF[edit]

Depending on how the ATK/DEF of these monster were calculated, the monster's ATK/DEF will interact differently with other card effects:

  • If that monster's effect determined that its ATK/DEF becomes the number of certain variables (such as "Aegaion the Sea Castrum" or "Kasha"), that monster will lose its ATK/DEF gain permanently when it is flipped face-down or its effect were negated even after it is flipped face-up or the negation effects wear off. When the other card's effect that might change that monster's ATK/DEF by a fixed value is activated, that monster's ATK/DEF gain will overrides that change if its own ATK/DEF altering effect resolved the last, unless that effect is a Continuous Effect which in that case its ATK/DEF will change accordingly.
  • If that monster's effect determined that its ATK/DEF are equal to, or that it gains its ATK/DEF to the number of certain variables (such as "Gren Maju Da Eiza" or "The Wicked Avatar"), that monster's ATK/DEF value will always equal to the variables noted in its effect, even while flipped face-down. That monster also regains its ATK/DEF equal to their variables when the negation effects wear off. If that monster is affected by certain cards that change its ATK/DEF by a fixed value, its ATK/DEF will change accordingly until variable noted in their effect changes, which in that case the ATK/DEF will be recalculated again, and if that effect is not a continuous one, then the new value will overrides the previous value.
    • A notable exception is "The Wicked Avatar", in which its effects always overrides any determined value ATK change.
  • If that monster's effect determines its original ATK/DEF values (such as the aforementioned "Chimeratech Overdragon" and "Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess"), that monster's ATK/DEF will be treated as a fixed value similar to other monsters with predetermined ATK/DEF and the ATK/DEF change effects will affect these card accordingly. If that monster's effect is negated, its ATK/DEF is restored to its original value, and it may or may not regain its ATK/DEF gain depending on how its ATK/DEF were calculated as described above.
  • If that monster is affected with certain cards with undetermined ATK/DEF changes (such as "United We Stand" or "Moon Mirror Shield"), then their ATK/DEF will be changed according to that card's effect with the method described above. If that effect stops applying, then the ATK/DEF of that affected monster will return to its value determined by its own effect.
    • For example, if "Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess" were summoned with 4 link materials, "Apollousa's" effect will determine its original ATK on the field equal to 800 x the number of link materials. In this case, "Apollousa's" original ATK will be 3200. If "Apollousa" uses its effect to reduce its ATK by 800 to negate an effect activation, its current ATK will be reduced to 2400. However, if "Apollousa" were equipped with "Moon Mirror Shield" which change the ATK of the equipped monster to becomes the ATK of the monster it is battling +100 during the damage calculation, "Apollousa's" ATK will be returned to the original value of 3200 after the effect of "Moon Mirror Shield" wears off. This is because "Apollousa's" ATK reduction effect does not affect its original ATK value.

Certain effects that involve doubling or halving the ATK/DEF also interact differently depending on that monster's effects:

  • If a card specified that it affect that monster's original ATK/DEF value, then the effect will apply on that monster's original ATK value. For example, if "Shrink" is applied on "Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast" that were summoned without tribute and have its original ATK reduced to 1400, "Shrink" will use the determined 1400 ATK to resolve its effect. However, when "Shrink" is applied on "Earthbound Immortal Wiraqocha Rasca" which has its ATK increased by its own effect to 3100, "Shrink" will only reduce the "original" ATK of "Wiraqocha" to 50 while not affecting "Wiraqocha's" ATK gain, resulting in 3050 ATK.
    • If that monster's ATK/DEF gain effect does not determines its original ATK/DEF and that doubling/halving is a continuous effect that affects the original ATK/DEF (i.e. "Megamorph"), that monster's ATK/DEF will be reset to 0 due to that monster's "default" ATK/DEF value is treated as 0.
  • If a card does not specify that it affect that monster's original ATK/DEF value, then apply the current ATK/DEF of that monster for calculation. For example, if "Limiter Removal" were used while "Cyber Eltanin" with 2000 ATK is on the field, its current ATK will be increased to 4000.
  • If that monster's ATK/DEF gain effect is a continuous variable, their ATK/DEF will be affected. If the variables change again, then ATK/DEF will be recalculated, then apply the doubling/halving effect accordingly. If that doubling/halving ATK/DEF change is a continuous effect (i.e "Black Garden" and "The Wicked Dreadroot"), in this case the monster's ATK/DEF will be halved and will not change until these effect stops applying.
    • "The Wicked Avatar" is also a notable exception, as its ATK gain effect will overrides any doubling/halving effect, so long as that effect is not a Continuous Effect that were activated after "Avatar" were summoned.
  • If that monster's ATK/DEF gain effect determines its original ATK/DEF, their ATK/DEF will change accordingly, similar to other monsters with fixed ATK/DEF value.
