Monster Cards have two Battle positions (or simply, 'positions'):

If an Attack Position monster battles with aDefense Position monster with a greater DEF than the ATK of the attacking monster, neither monster is destroyed. However, damage calculation is carried out as normal, with the attacking player losing Life Points equal to the difference between the ATK and DEF. If your Defense Position monster is attacked, your Life Points are normally safe, unless a card effect in play grants the attacking monster the "Piercing" effect.
