The Dragon type are typically composed of a classical depiction of the European dragons; typically reptilian-like in appearance and posesses demon/bat-like wings that symbolize chaos, evil, fierceness and intimidation. In recent years, there are also various Dragon monsters with human-like appearance with only some distinct draconic features to tell them apart from normal humans, either them being a human who inherited the draconic powers in some form, or that they are dragons that take the appearance of a human. Examples of these monsters including "Dragon Core Hexer", "Fallen of Albaz", and various "Dragonmaid" monsters.

Outside of the Dragon types, there are considerable amount of draconic monsters that belongs to the other types: the Sea Serpent generally consists of various sea dragons or similar marine reptile-like creatures, wheas the Wyrm type generally depicts the Eastern dragons along with the more mystical and spiritual appearances (though a considerable number of Dragon monsters released prior to the Wyrm type's existance, such as "Number 100: Numeron Dragon" resembles Wyrm monsters in appearance). In addition, there are also a large number of non-Dragon monsters with draconic features and "Dragon" in their names in various other types, such as the Machine-type "Cyber Dragon" or the Cyberse-type "Firewall Dragon", etc..

Dragons tend to be the strongest or key boss monster in numerous Deck types in addition one of the most established and powerful Monster Types in the entire franchise, with several multi-type themes having Dragon monsters as their ace, such as "Judgment Dragon" in "Lightsworn" Deck, and "Infernity Doom Dragon" in "Infernity" archetype. Ever since the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise began, Dragon monsters have been known for having an ATK power greater than any other type of monster in the game, rivalled only by the Machine type, in addition to having varied and powerful effects.

While there are numerous Dragon themes with varied playstyle, a recurring theme among several notable Dragon theme involves the use of Graveyard to set up their game plans, typically involves sending Dragon monsters to the GY to trigger their GY effects or to use them as a resource later on. Low-level Dragon monsters usually has an effect to aid in bringing out stronger monsters, either by searching them from the Main Deck or to send them to GY for later plays. While high-level Dragon monsters typically have powerful interruption or removal effect to disrupt the opponent's game plans.
