You must declare the target before players are allowed to chain to the effect. If another effect is chained to the original effect so that the target is not a legal target when resolving the original effect, then you do not get to "re-select" the target. The original effect resolves without effect (that is, it does nothing).

Targeting (対象とする taishō to suru) is the action of designating which specific cards are affected or used by card effects at the activation of a card effect. A card designated this way is the target (対象 taishō) of the effect.

* Example: Player A activates "Offerings to the Doomed" and targets "Dark Magician". Player B chains "Book of Moon", targeting the same "Dark Magician". "Book of Moon" resolves first, and changes "Dark Magician" to face-down Defense Position. Then, when "Offerings to the Doomed" resolves, "Dark Magician" is not destroyed - "Offerings to the Doomed" can only target face-up monsters, and "Dark Magician" is face-down, so "Offerings to the Doomed" resolves without effect.  You do not get to select a new monster to destroy.

If a card or effect targets, its targets must be chosen when it is activated.

* Example: Player A attacks with "The Tricky". Player B activates "Draining Shield", which targets because it selects "The Tricky's" attack to negate. If Player A activates "Trap Jammer", then "Draining Shield" resolves without effect.

Cards can be targeted if they are on the field, in the Graveyard, or banished. * Example: Player A activates "Monster Reborn" and targets "Blue Eyes White Dragon" in his Graveyard. Player B chains the effect of "D.D. Crow" from his hand, targeting "Blue Eyes White Dragon". Since "Blue Eyes White Dragon" is removed from the Graveyard, "Monster Reborn" resolves without effect.
+
In Problem-Solving Card Text, cards and effects that target always explicitly state that they target, except Equip Spell Cards because they always target. For older cards that do not use Problem-Solving Card Text, targeting is usually indicated by the words "select" or "designate"; however, some cards that target do not use these words, and some cards that use these words do not target, so it is necessary to confirm by checking the specific card's rulings.

* Example: Player A activates "Monster Reborn" and targets "Red Eyes Black Dragon" in Player B's Graveyard. Player B activates "Call of the Haunted" and targets "Red Eyes Black Dragon" in his Graveyard. "Red Eyes Black Dragon" is Special Summoned on Player B's field. "Monster Reborn" resolves without effect.
+
While targeting usually implies the player choosing a card, some cards automatically target a specific card without the player's input, such as "Magic Cylinder" and "Dimensional Prison".

Equip Spell Cards always target the monster which is being equipped.

Cards like "Dark Hole", "Mirror Force", "Lightning Vortex" and "Raigeki" do not target, because the player does not specify which cards will be affected - rather, it destroys all monsters, regardless of whether or not the monsters were on the field at activation. Likewise, "Fissure" and "Magical Dimension" do not target, because they select the monster to be destroyed when you are resolving the effect.
+
; Example 1
 +
# Player A activates "Magnet Reverse", targeting a "Morphtronic Smartfon" that has been Special Summoned by its own procedure, that is in their GY.
 +
# Player B chains "D.D. Crow", targeting "Morphtronic Smartfon" in Player A's GY.
 +
# "D.D. Crow" resolves, banishing "Morphtronic Smartfon" from Player A's GY.
 +
# "Magnet Reverse" revolves; no monster is Special Summoned, as "Morphtronic Smartfon" is no longer in the GY.

Effects that automatically choose what they are going to affect, like "Drillroid" usually do not target. There are exceptions, however: "Sakuretsu Armor" and "Dimensional Prison" do target, but without input from the player. Most Counter Trap Cards do not target for the same reason - most can only affect the effect directly beneath it in the Chain, so there is no selection, so the effect does not target.
+
Some cards and effects that target specify that the target must still meet the targeting requirements when their effect resolves. In Problem-Solving Card Text, this is indicated by referring to the target as "that target" in the resolution section of the effect.

If the card's text says "target", then the effect almost always targets. If the card's text says "select", or "designate" then the effect usually targets, although there are some exceptions. When in doubt, check the card's rulings to see whether or not it targets.

; Example 2
 +
# Player A activates "Offerings to the Doomed", targeting Player B's face-up "Dark Magician".
 +
# Player B chains "Book of Moon", targeting "Dark Magician".
 +
# "Book of Moon" resolves, changing "Dark Magician" to face-down Defense Position.
 +
# "Offerings to the Doomed" resolves; "Dark Magician" is not destroyed. (Because "Offerings to the Doomed" can only target face-up monsters and it uses the term "that target" to refer to the targeted monster in the resolution section of the effect, it cannot affect the target as a target if it has been changed face-down before the effect resolves.) "Offerings to the Doomed" skips Player A's next Draw Phase.

An important thing to note is that Spell/Trap cards cannot target themselves.
+
; Example 3

# Player A activates "Spiritual Entanglement", targeting Player B's face-up "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".

# Player B chains "Book of Moon", targeting "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".

# "Spiritual Entanglement" resolves and banishes "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" until the End Phase. (Even though "Spiritual Entanglement" can only target face-up monsters, it uses the term "it" to refer to the targeted monster in the resolution section of the effect, so can still affect the target even if it has been changed face-down before the effect resolves.)

* Example: Where this usually comes up is a player trying to get rid of a "Mystical Space Typhoon", so they can drop "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness", but the opponent not playing any Spell/Trap cards, or a player trying to use "Icarus Attack" when there aren’t enough cards on the field

Many effects do not target any cards, even if they require a player to choose specific cards to be affected. For cards with Problem-Solving Card Text, a non-Equip Spell Card targets if and only if it uses the word "target".

Targeting (たいしょうとする taishō to suru) is the action of designating which specific cards are affected or used by card effects at the activation of a card effect. A card designated this way is the target (たいしょう taishō) of the effect.

Activation[edit]

If a card or effect targets, its targets must be chosen when it is activated.

Cards can be targeted if they are on the field, in the Graveyard, or banished. Cards in the hand, Main Deck, Extra Deck,[1] or attached as Xyz Material cannot be targeted.

While targeting usually implies the player choosing a card, some cards automatically target a specific card without the player's input, such as "Magic Cylinder" and "Dimensional Prison".

Resolution[edit]

If a card was targeted by a card or effect, but when the effect resolves that target has changed location, the target is no longer valid and cannot be affected as the target.[2][3] The player does not get to change their target or select another target at resolution.

Example 1
 1. Player A activates "Magnet Reverse", targeting a "Morphtronic Smartfon" that has been Special Summoned by its own procedure, that is in their GY.
 2. Player B chains "D.D. Crow", targeting "Morphtronic Smartfon" in Player A's GY.
 3. "D.D. Crow" resolves, banishing "Morphtronic Smartfon" from Player A's GY.
 4. "Magnet Reverse" revolves; no monster is Special Summoned, as "Morphtronic Smartfon" is no longer in the GY.

Some cards and effects that target specify that the target must still meet the targeting requirements when their effect resolves. In Problem-Solving Card Text, this is indicated by referring to the target as "that target" in the resolution section of the effect.

Example 2
 1. Player A activates "Offerings to the Doomed", targeting Player B's face-up "Dark Magician".
 2. Player B chains "Book of Moon", targeting "Dark Magician".
 3. "Book of Moon" resolves, changing "Dark Magician" to face-down Defense Position.
 4. "Offerings to the Doomed" resolves; "Dark Magician" is not destroyed.
Example 3
 1. Player A activates "Spiritual Entanglement", targeting Player B's face-up "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".
 2. Player B chains "Book of Moon", targeting "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".
 3. "Book of Moon" resolves, changing "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to face-down Defense Position.
 4. "Spiritual Entanglement" resolves and banishes "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" until the End Phase. (Even though "Spiritual Entanglement" can only target face-up monsters, it uses the term "it" to refer to the targeted monster in the resolution section of the effect, so can still affect the target even if it has been changed face-down before the effect resolves.)

Effects that do not target[edit]

Many effects do not target any cards, even if they require a player to choose specific cards to be affected. For cards with Problem-Solving Card Text, a non-Equip Spell Card targets if and only if it uses the word "target".

Some examples of cards that do not target include:

 • Cards that affect as many cards as possible within a specific parameter, such as "all monsters on the field" (e.g. "Dark Hole")
 • Cards that "choose" a card(s) to be affected (e.g. "Forbidden Droplet")
 • Cards that affect a card(s) at effect resolution, without having to target at activation (e.g. "Fissure")
 • Cards that affect the card/effect activation it is responding to (e.g. "Solemn Strike")
