An attack (Japanese: こうげき Kōgeki) is an action performed in the Battle Phase that results in battle.

In the anime and manga, when a player declares an attack, the monster literally attacks the attack target. In most cases the weaker monster will just stand still while the other one destroys it, sometimes it will try to fight back, but will obviously lose unless the player somehow makes it stronger. Some attacks are also given names.

Usage[edit]

During the Battle Step of the Battle Phase, if the turn player wishes to declare an attack, they must choose 1 face-up Attack Position monster they control to attack with, and a valid attack target: their opponent (if they control no monsters) or a monster their opponent controls.[1] If the opponent is attacked, this is referred to as a direct attack.

Clarifications[edit]

  • It is possible for the opponent to be attacked "directly" even if they control a monster, but only via card effects that make it possible, such as those of "Wattkey" and "The Legendary Fisherman".

Card effect interactions[edit]

Multiple attacks[edit]

During a given turn, if a player cannot conduct their Battle Phase (due it being the first turn of the Duel, due to a card effect, or because they are not the turn player), they cannot activate cards or optional effects that grants multiple attacks to a monster(s) they control.[2][3]

During the Main Phase 2, the turn player cannot activate cards or optional effects that grants multiple attacks to a monster(s) they control.[4]

  • However, if the card effect accomplishes additional things, such as altering ATK, then it can be used.[5]

While a monster is prevented from attacking by a card effect, it cannot be targeted by effects that would grant it multiple attacks.[6][7]

If a monster is already affected by an effect that grants it a specific number of attacks during each Battle Phase, it cannot be granted the ability to attack multiple times by another card effect, if the amount of attacks it would be granted is less than or equal to how many times it can already attack.[8]

  • However, if the card effect accomplishes additional things, such as altering ATK, then it can be used.[9][10]

Legality of effects regarding the Battle Phase[edit]

  • If a player cannot conduct their Battle Phase during a given turn (due it being the first turn of the Duel, due to a card effect, or due to it not being their own turn), during that turn, they can still activate cards and effects that mandate the following:
    • "You cannot declare an attack during the turn you activate this effect", "You cannot declare an attack the turn you activate this effect", etc.
    • "You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this card", "You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you Special Summon this card.", etc.[1]
  • Cannot conduct Battle Phase: If a player cannot conduct their Battle Phase during a given turn (due to a card effect, it being the very 1st turn of the Duel, or because it is their opponent's turn), they can still activate cards and effects that prevent them from conducting their Battle Phase.
