Not all cards that send cards from the field to the Graveyard destroy them; cards like "[[Dark End Dragon]]", "[[Ninjitsu Art of Super-Transformation]]", and "[[Number 50: Blackship of Corn]]" send cards from the field to the Graveyard, but they do not destroy the cards, since they don't include the word "destroy" in the text; as such, these effects cannot be negated by effects like "[[Stardust Dragon]]".

Artwork of "Chthonian Blast", depicting a monster being destroyed

Destroying (Japanese: かい Hakai) is a method of removing cards from their original location, typically from the field. By default, destroyed cards are sent to the Graveyard.

Mechanics[edit]

Cards can be destroyed as a result of:

  • Card effects that specifically destroy cards
  • Battle
  • Specific card rulings or game mechanics

Though destroyed cards are sent to the Graveyard by default, destroy by itself doesn't specify a destination location. Even if destroyed cards are not sent to the Graveyard (e.g. due to the effect of "Macro Cosmos"), they are still considered to have been destroyed.

Cards sent from the field, hand, Main Deck, or Extra Deck to the Graveyard are not necessarily destroyed. Only the actions specified above can destroy cards, and cards may be sent to the Graveyard as a result of other actions.

Destroyed by card effect[edit]

Card effects can destroy cards if their card text specifically states that they do so. Only card effects that use the term "destroy" can destroy cards (e.g. "Exiled Force", "Horn of Heaven").

Cards on the field, hand, Main Deck, and Extra Deck can all be destroyed by card effects. Monsters whose Summons are negated by card effects can also be destroyed. Cards in the Graveyard and banished cards cannot be destroyed.

Cards cannot be destroyed in the Main Deck unless a card specifically allows it, such as "Chain Dispel"; for example, if "The Fabled Unicore" negates the activation of the effect of a card in the Main Deck, it will not be destroyed.

Destroyed by battle[edit]

Monsters on the field can be destroyed in a battle during damage calculation.

In the Damage Step, during damage calculation, if two Attack Position monsters battle each other, the one with the lower ATK is destroyed by battle, or both if they have equal amounts of ATK. If a Defense Position monster is attacked, neither battling monster will be destroyed by battle unless the attacked Defense Position monster has less DEF than the attacking monster's ATK.

If a monster is destroyed by battle, it will be sent to the GY only at the end of the Damage Step, not during damage calculation or immediately after damage calculation.

Some cards, such as "Mystic Swordsman LV2" and "Drillroid", have effects that destroy battling monsters during the Damage Step. However, cards destroyed this way are destroyed by that card effect, so are not considered to be destroyed by battle.

Destroyed by game mechanics[edit]

Certain game rules and card rulings can cause cards to be destroyed under specific conditions. They are not considered to have been destroyed by battle or card effects, and cannot be prevented or redirected with other card effects.[citation needed]

  • If a card has a maintenance cost that destroys the card if it is not fulfilled (e.g. "Messenger of Peace"), and this maintenance cost is no longer fulfilled, the card is destroyed.
  • If an Equip Card's equip target is no longer a face-up monster on the field, the Equip Card is destroyed.
  • If an Equip Card specifies an equip target with specific parameters (e.g. "Dragon Treasure"), and its equip target no longer meets those parameters, the Equip Card is destroyed.
  • If a card that is not normally an Equip Card is equipped to a monster by that monster's effect, and that monster's effect no longer applies, the equipped card is destroyed.
  • If a card has a Field-Unique or Control only one effect (e.g. "Earthbound Immortal" monsters), and it is placed face-up or flipped face-up on the field, while there is already another card on the field meeting its parameters, so that this new card now exceeds its stated on-field limit, the new card is destroyed.
  • If a Normal, Quick-Play or Ritual Spell Card, or a Normal or Counter Trap Card remains face-up on the field due to a card effect (e.g. "Swords of Revealing Light"), and that effect is no longer active, it is destroyed.
  • When taking control of the opponent's monster, if there is no available Monster Zone for it, it is destroyed while under the opponent's control.
  • Prior to 2014, if there was a face-up Field Spell in either player's Field Zone, and either player then plays another Field Spell face-up, the preexisting Field Spell is destroyed.
  • Prior to 2014, if a player had a Set card in their Field Zone and played a new Field Spell, the Set card is destroyed.
  • In TCG tournament settings, if an infinite loop with no net change is occurring, the card ruled by tournament judges to be the cause of the infinite loop is destroyed.
