Artwork of "Ectoplasmer", depicting a monster being Tributed

Tributing, called releasing (Japanese: リリース Rirīsu) in Japanese media and the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, is a method of removing a card from the hand or field. By default, Tributed cards are sent to the Graveyard.

"Tribute" (リリースする Rirīsu Suru) is primarily used as a verb. Previously, it was phrased as "offer as a Tribute" (生け贄に捧げる Ikenie ni Sasageru) in the OCG/TCG, as well as the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime. "Sacrifice" is also often used to refer to Tributing in the anime.

Mechanics[edit]

Cards can be Tributed as a result of:

Unless a card specifically permits a player to Tribute monsters in their hand or under their opponent's control (such as "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode", "Soul Exchange", and "Black Luster Ritual"), they can only Tribute monsters they control. While normally only monsters can be Tributed, some cards (such as several "True Draco" cards and "Kiryu") allow Spell and Trap Cards to be Tributed.

While Tributed cards are sent to the Graveyard by default, they can still be successfully Tributed even if a card effect would cause them to be sent to another location (e.g. due to the effect of "Macro Cosmos").

Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel[edit]

In Rush Duel, Tributing is exclusive to Tribute Summons.

Card effects that would Tribute monsters on the field in the OCG/TCG instead send them from the field to the Graveyard in Rush Duels. For example, in the OCG/TCG, "Cannon Soldier" Tributes monsters to use its effect, whereas in Rush Duels "Cannon Soldier" sends monsters from the field to the Graveyard.
