Fairy monsters often represent beings of LIGHT such as sprites or angels, although there are fairies of all 6 attributes. Many times, the Card Effects of Fairy monsters involve some restoration and protection of the player's Life Points.

They lose ATK and DEF when "Yami" is on the field, though Yami is now outdated and fairies do have their own Field Spell Card, "The Sanctuary in the Sky". Plus many can gain a 500 ATK boost from cards such as "Luminous Spark", "Rising Air Current" or "Gaia Power", because most Fairy monsters are either LIGHT, WIND, or EARTH Attribute (and in a few cases, DARK and WATER Attributes too.)

The Agent and Archlord cards of the Ancient Sanctuary Set are perhaps some of the best-known Fairies and some possess good effects with the Majestic Mechs as the second best known. Union monsters "Aitsu" and "Koitsu" work very well together as a low-level union with a high ATK, as do "Soitsu" and "Doitsu". "Cloudians" are WATER but share the Fairy Type, so can also use "The Sanctuary in the Sky" as one of their main gameplay elements. Other high ATK fairies include Wingweaver and Majestic Mech - Goryu. Another powerful, but risky, archetype are the Arcana Force, noted for gaining effects depending on coin tosses yet features two of the strongest Fairy-Type monsters in the game; "Arcana Force Ex - the Light Ruler and "Arcana Force EX - The Dark Ruler". Guardian Angel Joan is a well known Fairy-Type monster, both for having a very effective Life Points gain effect and for having Very High stats for a Level 7 monster. Another well known archetype are the "Parshaths", composed of Airknight Parshath, his DARK counterpart Darknight Parshath, the Synchro Monster version Avenging Knight Parshath, and Airknights upgraded version Neo-Parshath, the Sky Paladin, who can easily get his ATK as well as a players Life Points in the tens of thousands. An upcmong archetype called the "Vairon" will be released in the Duel Terminal series, focussing upon gaining effects while equipped Equip Spell Cards.

One of the best-known Fairy Archetypes are the "Synthetic Angels" and "Counter Fairies", who have effects revolving around the use of Counter Trap Cards. Bountiful Artemis and Voltanis the Adjudicator are examples of this. These Archetypes were featured prominently in the OCG Structure Deck, Structure Deck 11: Surge of Radiance.
