There is no restriction on the number of times a player can Special Summon in a turn—Special Summons do not take up the player's Normal Summon/Set for the turn. Special Summoning does not require Tributes for high-Level monsters like Normal Summons and Sets do, unless otherwise specified by a card.
+
Special Summon by Summoning procedure
 +
Many monsters have a Summoning procedure that specifies a method to Special Summon them. This procedure can be performed during an open game state in the turn player's Main Phase. A Special Summon performed this way does not create a Chain Link, but can be negated by effects that negate Summons.

Ritual Summons, Fusion Summons, Synchro Summons, Xyz Summons, and Pendulum Summons are all considered Special Summons.

Special Summon types
+
Special Summon Monsters
There are two different types of Special Summon. The type indicates which cards and effects can respond to or negate the Special Summon. Cards printed with Problem-Solving Card Text can easily have their method of Special Summon determined: effects that contain a colon or semicolon are Special Summons due to a card effect (and thus start a Chain), and cards that don't are built-in Special Summons.
+
For Special Summon Monsters, if they specify a Summoning procedure, the listed procedure is the only way to properly Special Summon that monster. For these monsters, this procedure is not an effect, so can be used even if the monster's effects are negated. Most non-Ritual Main Deck Special Summon Monsters, and some Extra Deck monsters, specify a Summoning procedure.

Built-in Special Summon
+
Examples:
Built-in Special Summons (also unofficially known as inherent Special Summons) are Special Summons that are done by a game mechanic (Synchro Summon, Xyz Summon, Pendulum Summon), the monsters' own Summoning condition (Nomi, Semi-Nomi) or a Summon monster effect.
+
* Special Summoning "Photon Thrasher" (from the hand) when the player controls no monsters.
 +
* Special Summoning "XY-Dragon Cannon" (from the Extra Deck) by banishing "X-Head Cannon" and "Y-Dragon Head"

Generally, these are performed when the game state is open during your Main Phase (e.g. "Cyber Dragon", "Stardust Dragon", "Number 39: Utopia", "Exodius the Ultimate Forbidden Lord"). They are never performed as part of an effect resolution; effects that would otherwise do this instead perform the Summon immediately after they resolve (e.g. "Formula Synchron", "Advanced Heraldry Art"), or are actually Special Summons with a card effect that treat the Summon as a Built-in Special Summon, like Xyz Summon (e.g. "Rank-Up-Magic").
+
Normal Summon Monsters
 +
For Normal Summon Monsters, if they specify a Summoning procedure, they can still be Special Summoned by other ways (unless otherwise specified). For these monsters, this procedure is an effect, so cannot be used if the monster's effects are negated. However, it is not an activated effect, so does not create a Chain Link.

For cards with Problem-Solving Card Text, monsters with Summon monster effects or Summoning conditions that Special Summon themselves this way specify in parenthesis "()" the location from which they can be Special Summoned.
+
Examples:
 +
* Special Summoning "Cyber Dragon" (from the hand) when only the opponent controls a monster.
 +
* Special Summoning "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" (from the Graveyard) by returning a monster a "Dark World" monster on the field to the hand.

There is a difference between Summoning a monster with a Summon monster effect and with a Summoning conditions. If the monster can be Normal Summoned/Set, then its built-in Special Summon is done by a Summon monster effect, which is a type of Unclassified Effect. Conversely, if the monster is a Special Summon monster, then its built-in Special Summon is a Summoning condition. This distinction causes subtle differences; for example, the effect of "Vampire Grace" can be activated when "Goka, the Pyre of Malice" is Special Summoned by its own Summon monster effect, but not when "Vampire Genesis" is Special Summoned by its own Summon condition.
+
Special Summon by card effect
 +
Cards can have effects that allow players to Special Summon monsters to the field.

Built-in Special Summons are the only kind of Special Summons that can be negated. When a player attempts to perform a built-in Special Summon, the Summon negation window opens, providing both players with the opportunity to negate the Summon. However, as performing a built-in Special Summon does not go on a Chain, cards such as "Divine Wrath" cannot be Chained to the attempted Summon.
+
Activated effect
 +
Many cards and activated effects have effects that Special Summons monsters to the field. The activation of any card or effect necessarily creates a Chain Link. While the activation or effect of these effects can be negated, the Summons themselves cannot be.

Special Summon with a card effect
+
Ritual and Fusion Summoning are always performed by card effects.
Special Summons with a card effect are any Special Summon that occurs during the resolution of an activated card effect (e.g. "Monster Reborn" and "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness"). Fusion Summons, Ritual Summons and Rank-Ups fall under this group of Special Summons.

These Special Summons cannot be negated. However, they can be prevented from occurring in the first place by negating the effect that would perform the Special Summon; cards such as "Divine Wrath" and "Dark Bribe" can negate the activation of a monster effect or Spell/Trap Card that would Special Summon a monster, respectively. "Solemn Judgement" can negate either a Spell/Trap effect (including one that would Special Summon a monster) or a built-in Special Summon; however, it cannot negate monster effects that Special Summon.
+
Examples:
 +
* Activating the effect of "Genex Ally Birdman" by returning 1 face-up monster the player controls to the hand, to Special Summon it from the hand.
 +
* Activating the effect of "Polymerization", using "Elemental HERO Avian" and "Elemental HERO Burstinatrix" as Fusion Material to Fusion Summon "Elemental HERO Flame Wingman"

While they are rare, Special Summons as the result of an activated card or effect that do not occur during that effect's resolution, except Synchro and Xyz Summons, also fall into this category. Cards such as "Revival Jam" and "Memory of an Adversary" can perform this kind of Special Summon.
+
Non-activated effect
 +
Some cards have effects that can Special Summon monsters without using a Chain Link. These effects often do still need to activate initially, but the Special Summon is performed later, outside of a Chain Link.

Some effects that Special Summon can ignore the Summoning conditions of the Summoned monster, allowing it to Special Summon monsters that have Summoning conditions that would prevent them being Summoned that way.
+
Examples:
 +
* Special Summoning "Revival Jam" during the player's next Standby Phase after its effect was activated
 +
* "Vicious Claw" applying its effect to return itself to the hand to prevent the equipped monster from being destroyed by battle, destroy a monster on the field, then Special Summon an "Evil Token"
 +
* "Synthetic Seraphim" applying its effect to Special Summon a "Synthetic Seraphim Token" immediately after a Counter Trap Card resolves

The Summon response window is an unofficial term used to describe the timing in which cards and effects can be activated in response to a successful Summon. Cards and effects that can be activated in response to a successful Special Summon, such as "Torrential Tribute" and "Bottomless Trap Hole", can be activated after any of these Special Summons, regardless of whether it is built-in or with a card effect. However, they cannot be activated if a monster is Special Summoned by a card effect that is Chain Link 2 or higher, unless the activation of all other cards and effects that would resolve after it are negated. This is because cards and effects cannot be activated in the middle of a resolving Chain, and whichever effect resolves last (as Chain Link 1) would cause these cards to miss the timing.

Artwork of "Reanimation Wave", an example of a card that Special Summons a monster

A Special Summon (とくしゅしょうかん Tokushu Shōkan) is any type of Summon that is not a Normal Summon or a Flip Summon. Fusion Summons, Ritual Summons, Synchro Summons, Xyz Summons, Pendulum Summons, and Link Summons are all types of Special Summons.

If a monster is Set in a Monster Zone by a card effect, and is not being Normal Set, that is implicitly a Special Summon face-down. For example, if the effect of "Toadally Awesome" causes a monster to be Set onto the field, that monster is being Special Summoned in face-down Defense Position.

There is no limit on the number of times a player can Special Summon each turn. Unless otherwise specified, by default a Special Summon is performed in either face-up Attack or Defense Position (the battle position is decided by the player performing the Summon).[1]

Mechanics[edit]

Special Summon by game mechanics[edit]

There are several game mechanics which allow the turn player to perform a Special Summon during an open game state in their Main Phase. Specifically, they are: Synchro Summon, Xyz Summon, Pendulum Summon, and Link Summon. A Special Summon performed this way does not create a Chain Link, but can be negated by effects that negate Summons.

Cards and effects that perform a Special Summon by game mechanics (e.g. "Urgent Tuning", "Wonder Xyz") are still considered to be a Special Summon by game mechanics; the Summon is performed immediately after the effect resolves, so can be negated if the card was used as Chain Link 1. In contrast, effects that perform a Special Summon treated as one of these types of Summon (e.g. "Necroid Synchro", "Numbers Eveil") are not considered to be Special Summons by game mechanics, but rather a Special Summon by card effect that is merely treated as one of these types of Summon.

Along with Special Summons by Summoning procedures, they are collectively known as "Built-In Summons".[2]

Special Summon by Summoning procedure[edit]

Many monsters have a Summoning procedure that specifies a method to Special Summon them. This procedure can be performed during an open game state in the turn player's Main Phase. A Special Summon performed this way does not create a Chain Link, but can be negated by effects that negate Summons.

Along with Special Summons by game mechanics, they are collectively known as "Built-In Summons".[2]

Special Summon Monsters[edit]

For Special Summon Monsters, if they specify a Summoning procedure, the listed procedure is the only way to properly Special Summon that monster. For these monsters, this procedure is not an effect, so can be used even if the monster's effects are negated. Most non-Ritual Main Deck Special Summon Monsters, and some Extra Deck monsters, specify a Summoning procedure.

Examples:

Normal Summon Monsters[edit]

For Normal Summon Monsters, if they specify a Summoning procedure, they can still be Special Summoned by other ways (unless otherwise specified). For these monsters, this procedure is an effect, so cannot be used if the monster's effects are negated. However, it is not an activated effect, so does not create a Chain Link.

Examples:

 • Special Summoning "Cyber Dragon" (from the hand) when only the opponent controls a monster.
 • Special Summoning "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" (from the Graveyard) by returning a monster a "Dark World" monster on the field to the hand.

Special Summon by card effect[edit]

Cards can have effects that allow players to Special Summon monsters to the field.

Activated effect[edit]

Many cards and activated effects have effects that Special Summons monsters to the field. The activation of any card or effect necessarily creates a Chain Link. While the activation or effect of these effects can be negated, the Summons themselves cannot be.[2]

Ritual and Fusion Summoning are always performed by card effects.

Examples:

Non-activated effect[edit]

Some cards have effects that can Special Summon monsters without using a Chain Link. These effects often do still need to activate initially, but the Special Summon is performed later, outside of a Chain Link.

Examples:

 • Special Summoning "Revival Jam" during the player's next Standby Phase after its effect was activated
 • "Vicious Claw" applying its effect to return itself to the hand to prevent the equipped monster from being destroyed by battle, destroy a monster on the field, then Special Summon an "Evil Token"
 • "Synthetic Seraphim" applying its effect to Special Summon a "Synthetic Seraphim Token" immediately after a Counter Trap Card resolves
