Genryu (げんりゅう Genryū) is the newest Monster Card Type, introduced in Duelist Alliance.

The currently revealed Genryu-Type monsters is a new monster type that debuted in Duelist Alliance. They resemble Dragon-Type monsters, but unlike Dragons, Genryu monsters seem to take more of a spiritual, mythical and phantasmal look. Currently all of them, except "Metaphized Armed Dragon", are part of the "Cosmic Dragon" archetype, which seems to be based on Chinese dragons and/or other animals within the lore of China such as tigers (some may be a mix of the two), resembling "Tiger Dragon" and "Orient Dragon" (which are listed as normal Dragons). "Metaphization", the type's first generic support card, hints that there is a relationship between the Dragon Type and the Genryu Type.

The kanji げん (gen) can be variously translated as "phantom", "illusion", "vision", "apparition", "legendary", "mythic" or a number of related terms; りゅう (ryū) is the kanji for "dragon".

Trivia

  • This monster type is similar to the Psychic-Type, who usually resemble another Type of monster. In addition, they also debuted in the first Booster Pack of the series, in which new techniques of summoning were introduced as well.
  • So far the revealed monsters for this type appear to mimic the effects of the Djinn of Rituals. Like the Djinns, they facilitate a type of Summoning (in this case Synchro Summoning) and add perks to the cards Summoned via their effect.
