Ohdo, Yuhi

Yuhi Ohdo (おうどう ゆう Ōdō Yūhi) is one of the main characters of the Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! anime. Prior to the series a mysterious substance, Earthdamar, was stolen from Yuhi by Tell Kawai, and Yuhi has been searching for aliens ever since to retrieve it. He works for UTS under his twin sister Yuamu.

Appearance

Full-body view of Yuhi in the first and second seasons.
Reference sheets, including closeups from multiple angles.

Yuhi is a short young boy with red eyes and spiky hair that has a blonde bottom layer and a dark red upper layer, with a red spike at the front of his head resembling a falling meteor. He wears an orange jumpsuit over a dark blue shirt, with a UTS symbol on the left shoulder, white protective gloves and white and black boots. He also wears a headset with a white band, grey earpieces, and a small grey camera, and a convoluted harness strapped over his right shoulder, under his left arm, and crooked over his hips that holds a black Deck box with a red lid.

In his casual clothes, Yuhi wears a yellow jacket with numerous zipper-sealed pockets, a white shirt with a black line down the middle that ends a third of the way down his chest, black baggy pants with tight cuffs, charcoal socks and red shoes with a white underlayer and yellow laces. He carries his Deck box in a simpler harness over one shoulder under his jacket.

In the second season, Yuhi has grown out a rat's tail with a dark red tip and wears a blue-black gakuran. He wears the jacket unbuttoned with the sleeves rolled up over a white shirt and a brown strap, and blue-black pants with a black, heavy-buckled belt, charcoal socks and black loafers. While he and his twin sister Yuamu were around the same height in the first season, he has grown taller than her by the start of the second season.

Personality

Yuhi is an energetic and outgoing boy who faces challenges head-on. Somewhat impulsive, he sometimes finds himself in trouble after charging into situations without thinking. He has a great love for Rush Dueling and confidence in his skills to match. That confidence can lead him astray, though, seen in both his underestimating his opponent and his occasional misplays.[4]

Compared to his sister, Yuhi is the more excitable of the two. Unlike Yuamu, he expressed a natural level of shock and concern upon being abducted by Yudias, acting far more distressed throughout the situation. Even so, he quickly gains composure after challenging the alien to a Rush Duel, excited by the idea of Dueling an alien. Despite being the older twin, he generally follows Yuamu's orders while on the job, with her taking advantage of his abilities for the sake of expanding the company.[2]

Yuhi is interested in aliens and pursues sightings to take them on in Rush Duels. He has expressed a desire to battle any aliens he meets in the hopes of retrieving the Earthdamar he believes one stole from him. He does not appear to actually be prejudiced against aliens, however, as he is more than happy to befriend and work with Yudias after learning he was not the thief he was looking for.

Following his discovery of the true nature of the Earthdamar, Yuhi becomes discouraged against retrieving it and suffers from nausea whenever thinking about it or in the presence of its effects; this nausea disappears when the substance or its effects are removed.

Voice/mannerisms

Yuhi tends to use words specific to people from the countryside and often avoids using contractions in his speech.

At the start of the series, Yuhi had a youthful, higher-pitched voice. As a result of his voice actor aging, Yuhi's voice gradually deepened over time.

Abilities

Yuhi is a skilled Rush Duelist. However, he is still prone to making mistakes, such as when a misplay eventually cost him the Duel against Yudias, despite the alien having never played the game before that point. He is also stated to not be as strong as Yuamu.[2] When an alien is near, the red spike of Yuhi's hair will point up; Yuhi does not seem aware of this, but his sister has learned to use it to detect aliens. Like his sister, he seems adept at riding a hoverboard.

Prior to the series Yuhi had the Earthdamar contained within him. Yuhi claims he lost some of his Dueling ability when Tell Kawai removed it, but it is unclear if he could use the substance's other abilities while it was contained within him. After its removal, the use of the Earthdamar or objects exposed to it cause Yuhi to experience nausea. When Zuwijo zir Velgear used the Earthdamar to merge with "Voidvelgr Requiem", Yuhi's consciousness was also drawn into the monster.

Etymology

Yuhi's name contains the character「遊」(Yu) that previous Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonists have, and out of him, Yuamu and Yudias, his name is the only one to do so and retain the full sound. 「飛」 means "flight" and is the Kanji abbreviation of the Shogi piece Rook. His last name translates to "Royal Road".

Biography

History

An alien defeated Yuhi in a Rush Duel and stole the Earthdamar from him, and he began seeking any alien he could find in hopes of getting it back.[4][5]

First Arc

Yuhi heard a loud noise one night, but didn't think much of it and went back to sleep. He told Yuamu about the noise the next day as they worked to capture a cat, though Yuhi bungled the capture and was scratched by the cat. As he and Yuamu headed back, Yuhi lamented the loss of the Earthdamar and vowed to Rush Duel the alien that had taken it, but to his shock Yuamu showed him a crop circle made by fallen trees. Yuamu found an invisible wall that contained a door to a spaceship, which took off as soon as they boarded and left Earth. The ship's occupant, Yudias Velgear, approached them and confirmed he was an alien, and after Yuamu reminded Yuhi, he challenged Yudias to a Rush Duel to get the Earthdamar back. Yudias agreed, though he was unfamiliar with Yuhi's cards and tried to Rush Duel with unopened booster packs. Yuhi opened one for Yudias, but to his shock Yudias bound him in electricity and accused him of destroying his Rush Duels until Yuamu told him about the cards inside. Yudias released Yuhi and explained he and 8.88 million of his people had fled from the Velgear Star Cluster, having heard a legend that Rush Dueling could save his home. To Yuhi's discomfort, Yuamu added conditions to the Duel; they would teach Yudias about Rush Dueling if he won, but if Yuhi won Yudias would work for UTS.[4]

Yudias agreed and he and Yuhi began Rush Dueling, Yuamu tutoring Yudias, while Yuhi only drew one monster, "Tamabot", so he decided to go easy on Yudias since he was a beginner, but to his shock Yudias Summoned three Galaxy Type monsters and reduced Yuhi to 500 LP in one turn. Despite his predicament, Yuhi believed he could make a comeback, though he found himself bound in electricity again when Yudias believed he was cheating by drawing four cards until Yuamu explained the rules. Yuhi Summoned three monsters and destroyed Yudias', telling him that a Rush Duel could change in an instant. He believed his three Trap Cards could counter any monsters Yudias Summoned if they were high-Level or he increased their ATK, but to his shock Yudias revealed "Transamu Rainac", a Level 4 monster with 1600 ATK that he defeated Yuhi with. Although Yuhi had been skeptical of Yudias' claim "Transamu Rainac" resembled him, in the instant it attacked he saw Yudias in the monster. Yuhi shook hands with Yudias afterwards and as they had promised, Yuamu agreed to teach Yudias about Rush Dueling, getting him to agree to work for UTS while she did. However, once they returned to Earth, Yudias revealed he hadn't stolen the Earthdamar and misinterpreted their request to handle the phone to destroy it, much to Yuhi and Yuamu's horror.[4]

After getting Yudias to pack his cards up from the sidewalk one morning, Yuhi, Yuamu and Yudias tracked down a missing cat again; Yuhi tried to catch it, but bumped into the invisible Valvelgear; fortunately Yudias caught the cat. After they returned it to its owner, Yuamu noted it was different from the cat that had clawed Yuhi and Yuhi grumbled over not getting the Earthdamar back again, though he didn't explain it to Yudias. A new client came to them requesting they find his dog, Yuhi immediately believing the alien that stole his Earthdamar to be responsible. However, Yuamu revealed the client was lying due to beig covered in cat hair and he revealed himself as Manabu Sogetsu from MIK, who was hunting Yudias with his partner, the cat that had scratched Yuhi that was capable of speech. Manabu confiscated some of Yuhi's cards that he'd found outside; Yuhi had left them while helping Yudias and tried to challenge Manabu to a Rush Duel, but Manabu refused due to Yuhi's carelessness. Yudias then came in, taking part of the blame for Yuhi's cards and challenging Manabu himself by appealing to his warrior's spirit. Manabu's burn strategy proved effective at reducing Yudias' LP, and Yudias hesitated at one point; Yuamu deduced Yudias didn't want to Tribute his monsters, something Yuhi found silly and he urged Yudias to Tribute Summon. Yudias eventually did so after Manabu assured him his monsters entrusted him with victory when they were Tributed, defeating Manabu and ensuring his safety. Afterwards Yuamu revealed the 8.88 million Velgearians in Valvelgear to MIK, Yuhi joining her in impressing the numerical different on Manabu and his cat, and MIK retreated.[6]

Yuhi was having dinner at UTS when Mr. Yagi was attacked by an alien that ate the yakitori skewers he was preparing. Incensed by the loss of their food and believing the alien responsible had also stolen the Earthdamar, Yuhi set off in hot pursuit with Yudias, and they disguised themselves in a yakitori costume in an attempt to lure the alien, but only found Mr. Yagi, who had mistaken them for the alien. They then heard the cries of a girl dressed as "Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan" being menaced by the alien; Yuamu had disguised herself to lure it out, as the alien had been responsible for serial attacks all involving "Meeeg-chan". Manabu and his cat, Nyandestar, arrived to arrest the alien, Chupataro Kaburagi, and Yuamu challenged Chupataro to a Rush Duel to ensure his cooperation, Yuhi congratulating Yudias on ensuring Manabu's cooperation again. Yuhi explained Spell Cards to Yudias during the Duel, Yuamu was pushed into a corner by Chupataro's "Meeeg-chan" and "Meet and Greed" Spell, but Yuamu defeated Chupataro with "Blue Tooth Burst Dragon" and her own "Dragonic Gacharge". After the Duel Yuhi was dismayed to learn Chupataro also didn't have his Earthdamar before he was taken away by Manabu and Nyandestar; Yuhi, Yuamu, Yudias and Mr. Yagi returned to UTS to continue their meal.[7]

As Yuhi finished breakfast one Sunday he accidentally knocked Valvelgear off a table and broke off one of its gravity control units. Fearing he'd killed all 8.88 million Velgearians, Yuhi ran off without Yuamu and Yudias to a craft store, first trying to tape the unit back onto the ship and then crafting a decoy from paper to buy him time to make proper repairs. He eventually discovered Valvelgear and the Velgearians were still alive, but their panicked reaction caused them to land in a garbage truck, which Yuhi tracked to Mutsuba Heavy Machinery Garbage Collection Site #8. As he spotted Valvelgear landing in a conveyor belt, he saw the alien who had stolen the Earthdamar bathing in the river outside the Garbage Collection Site, and Yuhi was torn between saving Valvelgear and pursuing the alien, but eventually rescued Valvelgear. To his surprise he found Chupataro had imprisoned Yudias in a mechanical clamp, and Chupataro stole Valvelgear from Yuhi, but accidentally took the paper model instead and threatened Yudias' countrymen. Knowing he had the real ship, Yuhi goaded Chupataro into dropping the model and revealed his deception. Chupataro tried to attack Yuhi, but was captured by MIK agents called by Yuamu after she noticed Yudias had gone missing; Manabu and Nyandestar allowed Yuhi and Yudias to leave without charge for their help. Afterwards Yudias repaired Valvelgear and confirmed the other Velgearians had accepted Yuhi as one of them, and Yuhi looked at the spot where the other alien had been bathing.[5]

Yudias accidentally destroyed UTS' washing machine, so Yuhi took their laundry to Kappa Heavenly Cleaning, only to find it drenched when it was returned, including his Duel Disk. Yuhi went to the owner, Tell Kawai, to complain, but found to his shock Tell was the alien who had stolen his Earthdamar. Tell dropped Yuhi into his lab and admitted he'd hoped to meet him again, accepting Yuhi's challenge to Rush Duel and return the Earthdamar on the condition Yuhi became his test subject if he lost. Yuhi agreed, but found his Duel Disk didn't work due the water damage, though fortunately Valvelgear had followed him to Tell's store and transformed itself into a Duel Disk for him. To his terror, Yuamu and Yudias arrived; Yuhi worried Yuamu would hold him responsible for her best dress being drenched by Tell. Yuhi's different Deck surprised Tell, who Yuhi noted used the same strategies as their last Rush Duel, though Tell hadn't been drenched in water then. Tell explained the secretion had begun after he took Yuhi's Earthdamar due to his inability to solve its mysteries and almost defeated Yuhi, but Yuhi activated his "Jointech Bumper" to destroy Tell's monsters. Valvelgear had trouble replicating the activation function, though Yuhi's belief in the 8.88 million Velgearians encouraged them to successfully activate the Trap. On his next turn Yuhi Summoned "Jointech Rex" and destroyed Tell's Trap to prevent a counterattack, defeating him in a One Turn Kill. Tell revealed the Earthdamar after the Duel, a nauseating figure of miasma he encouraged Yuhi to ingest, but before Yuhi could it was stolen by Zuwijo zir Velgear. Manabu and Nyandestar then arrived and revealed a Velgearian was behind Chupataro's actions.[8]

Yudias explained Zuwijo was his former commanding officer, who he had thought dead. Yuhi and Yuamu offered to help Yudias search for Zuwijo, but their search turned up nothing after a week, forcing them to return to work. Mr. Omaeno recommended three urban myths for them to investigate; Yuhi investigated a legend about three warping granny sisters, but these turned out to simply be deliverywomen for Ramen Hut, and he and Yuamu met up with Yudias at the warehouse he was investigating. To Yuhi's shock, the chair Yudias was sitting in was an alien, Mitsuko Hiramori, who challenged Yudias to a Rush Duel, and Yuhi encouraged Yudias to show the efforts of his training. Despite suffering difficulty from Mitsuko's urban legend-themed cards and his own misplay, Yudias defeated her and noted Mitsuko had been using the urban legends to keep people away from the warehouse. Yudias revealed Zuwijo had been watching them the entire time, and Zuwijo asked Yudias to come with him and use Rush Dueling to destroy their enemy, though Yudias refused and Zuwjo denounced him. MIK then arrived, arresting Mitsuko and failing to capture Zuwijo; Mitsuko telling Yudias he would meet Zuwijo again as she was taken away, prompting Yuhi to wonder why she was acting so high and mighty.[9]

Yudias asked Yuhi to train him to become a Rush Dueling Expert, and Yuhi initially tried to shrug off the responsibility, but was convinced after Yuamu offered to teach Yudias, claiming she would be better than Yuhi. Yuhi modified Mr. Tazaki's tractor into the "Special Training Mecha" so Yudias could use Saikyo Rush Duel tapes to practice Dueling questions while he built his Deck and they drove around the farm. During the training Yuhi drove over a bump, knocking Valvelgear into the dashboard and preventing the tractor from stopping, and they drove through the fence and past CAFÉ, accidentally scooping up Manabu and Nyandestar. Begged by the MIK agents to stop, Yuhi admitted the only way they could would be for Yudias to answer all 100 questions on the tape and continued to try the brakes the entire time as Yudias answered the questions. To their horror the tractor headed towards a cliff with one question to go; all the Types in the game, and Yudias eventually answered correctly after some difficulty, stopping the tractor on the edge of the cliff. They were dislodged by a pigeon perching on the balancing tractor, but rescued by Valvelgear growing to a massive size. That evening Yudias revealed there was a course to become a Rush Duel Master, and the thought of another training session for Yudias sent Yuhi fleeing from the house, unwilling to do so again.[10]

Yuamu's childhood friend Manya Atachi returned to Mutsuba Town to Rush Duel against a local elementary school team; Yuamu was able to ensure she, Yuhi and Yudias would Duel, so they went to the Mutsuba Cable Studio for the live filming of the Duels. Although Yuhi didn't remember Manya, he was surprised by her cold manner backstage and her excitable acting on-camera. Yuhi was intended to Duel first, but Manya decided to Duel first for her team, leading to Yuamu taking Yuhi's place. During the Rush Duel Yuhi taught Yudias about Field Spell Cards and further explained Yuamu's Deck to him. Yuamu defeated Manya, who warmly exchanged memories with Yuamu after the Duel to Yuhi's surprise; Yuamu explained Manya had been acting the entire time and Yuamu had noticed.[11] To Yuhi's shock, Manya nominated Manabu, who was in the audience, to Duel for the local team next, against her dog Bochi. Yuhi was confused as to how a dog could Duel, but Bochi revealed himself to be an alien and transformed into a humanoid form, answering Yuhi's question. During the Duel it was revealed Bochi had previously played with Manabu while he studied Sogetsu Style, but had been abandoned when Manabu had been discovered by his teachers and sent to train alone, while Bochi himself had intended to destroy Sogetsu Style through trickery, a style Yudias admitted he had been struck by. Manabu defeated Bochi, who admitted he'd turned away from his original plan when he became Manya's protector. Although the local team had won the Duels, Yuhi still hadn't Dueled and suggested they continue, claiming Manabu's victory didn't count as he hadn't originally been on their team. Manya agreed to Yuhi's joy, but then Chupataro barged in and demanded to Rush Duel.[12] Yudias accepted despite Yuhi's protests given they didn't know Chupataro's intent, but Yudias had noticed Chupataro was acting strangely and wanted to determine why. Yudias gained a significant lead over Chupataro when the latter used a Trap to reduce the ATK of his monster just to draw "Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan", but when Chupataro began his next turn and Summoned "Meeeg-chan", Yuhi felt a sensation strike him. To his shock, Chupataro's eyes and Duel Disk pulsed with the glow of the Earthdamar, which brought "Meeeg-chan" to life and caused Yuhi to feel nauseous. Meeeg-chan knocked the weakened Chupataro out and took over the Duel, physically attacking Yudias even on his own turn. Yuhi tried to encourage Yudias to fight back with his beams, but Yudias remained dedicated to obeying the rules and used "Galactica Amnesia" to get the Tributes for "Galactica Oblivion", powering it up and defeating Meeeg-chan, causing her to disappear and curing Yuhi's nausea. Chupataro was taken away by MIK, having been released previously by Mitsuko.[13]

After Yudias recovered, Manabu and Nyandestar arrived to question him over Zuwijo's whereabouts, and Yuhi defended Yudias, believing he wouldn't lie if he knew where Zuwijo was hiding, an assessment Nyandestar agreed with. After Manabu and Nyandestar left, Yudias asked Yuhi and Yuamu to reteach him Rush Dueling, hoping to become stronger, and Yuhi assisted Yudias in training. Afterwards Bochi accidentally switched on a recording of Yuhi and Yuamu Dueling, where Yuamu had defeated Yuhi after tricking him by checking the contents of her Graveyard, a lesson that inspired Yudias to track Zuwijo by understanding his intentions. Yuhi accompanied Yudias, Yuamu, Manya, Bochi and Manya's manager London Kirishima to Chupataro's former residence, though he was skeptical he would find anything there. However they realized Zuwijo had been trying to make a statement, and Yudias deduced he would likely be at Mutsuba Tower. Yuhi accompanied his friends to the Tower, where they found Zuwijo and Mitsuko.[14]

Yudias and Zuwijo Rush Dueled after Yudias was unable to convince Zuwijo to abandon his crusade, and Zuwijo summoned "Voidvelgr Hecatoncheir" and materialized it with the Earthdamar, causing Yuhi to feel nauseous again, though in a different manner from previously. As Zuwijo was attacking Yudias outside the Battle Phase with "Hecatoncheir", Yuhi attempted to produce another Earthdamar for Yudias to use, but failed, though Yudias assured Yuhi he had instead received his feelings. Yuhi also attempted to warn Zuwijo he would collapse as Chupataro had, though Mitsuko claimed Zuwijo possessed a strong enough heart to endure the Earthdamar. Yudias destroyed "Heactoncheir", but Zuwijo summoned "Voidvelgr Requiem" and not only materialized it with the Earthdamar, but merged with it, causing Yuhi to shake in agony.[15] After the effects of the Earthdamar began to materialize monsters across Mutsuba Town, Yuhi's soul was drawn into "Requiem" with Zuwijo, his physical body collapsing, though he was able to call out to his sister and Yudias. Yuhi eventually began fighting against Zuwijo from within 'Requiem", refusing to allow him to do as he pleased, and he contacted Yuamu, asking her to convey to Yudias his desire for Yudias not to hold back, given Yuhi would soon lose consciousness regardless. Fortunately Yudias was able to destroy "Requiem" and defeat Zuwijo, freeing Yuhi's soul. Yuhi awoke after the Duel to find Zuwijo had fled and asked Yudias if Zuwijo was really evil, given Zuwijo could easily have crushed them with "Requiem" and defeated Yudias during the Duel, and Yudias explained his belief that Zuwijo was hiding something.[16]

Relationships

Valvelgear

After saving the 8.88 million Velgearians aboard Valvelgear at the Mutsuba Heavy Machinery Garbage Collection Site #8, they are very friendly with Yuhi, even accepting him as one of their own. After Yuhi's Duel Disk breaks, Valvelgear transforms into a Duel Disk, permanently replacing Yuhi's old one.

Decks

Season 1

Yuhi uses a Jointech Deck, composed primarily of EARTH Attribute Machine Type monsters. The playstyle of the Deck revolves around generating small amounts of Field and LP advantages by either milling cards for cost or sending monsters to the Graveyard to generate enough resources for the effect of "Jointech Rex", and relying on powerful Trap Cards for support.

Season 2

Although Yuhi quit Rush Duels after seeing Phaser Ryugu defeat That Guy, Damamu and Yuamu confirmed he continued collecting cards and building Decks. He still uses a Jointech Deck, adding new ones that are modeled on invertebrates, in addition to "Power Bond" to Fusion Summon Machine Type Fusion Monsters with doubled ATK; his LP restoration strategies help offset the damage caused by its drawback. To reference his delinquent look, his new monsters wear dark shades and his copies of "Tamabot" now use an alternative artwork looking angry and worn down.

High Tech Dragon

Prior to his Rush Duel with Shewbahha, Yuhi and Yuamu accidentally swapped Decks, resulting in him using her High Tech Dragon Deck. Yuhi used to own this Deck, but swapped it for his current Deck some time after his loss against Tell Kawai.

Straynge Cat

For his Rush Duel with Yuga Ohdo while struck in the card world, Yuhi's Deck gets switched for a Deck centered around the "Straynge Cat" card.
