Wyrm-Type monsters resemble dragons, but unlike [[Dragon]]-Type monsters, they take more of a spiritual, mythical, metaphysical look. Most of the intial Wyrm-Type monsters were part of the "[[Yang Zing]]" archetype, which seems to be based on Chinese dragons and/or other animals within the lore of China such as tigers (some may be a mix of the two), resembling "[[Tiger Dragon]]" and "[[Orient Dragon]]" (which are both Dragon-Types, not Wyrm-Types). "[[Dracocension]]", the Type's first generic support card, hints that there is a relationship between the Dragon-Type and the Wyrm-Type.

Wyrm (Japanese: げんりゅう Genryū, lit. "Phantom Dragon") is a Type of monster introduced in Duelist Alliance.

Overview[edit]

A wyrm (pronounced worm or vurm) is a type of dragon that commonly appears in British and Norse mythology. These dragons have no legs or arms and only the long, scaled body of a serpent. They are often given poisonous breath and the ability to regenerate or reattach pieces of their body that have been cut off.

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, Wyrm monsters resemble dragons, but unlike Dragon monsters, they take more of a spiritual, mythical, metaphysical look. Many Wyrm monsters exhibit Oriental or East Asian influences, such as the "Yang Zing" and "Tenyi" archetypes.

Like the related Dragon-type, Wyrm Decks often involves assembling weaker Wyrm monsters to summon stronger boss monsters with various disruptive effects. Though, compared to the Dragon-type, Wyrm Decks often has further emphasis on the usage of banishment to either activating their effects or provide recursion for the theme.

Appearance in media[edit]

Although Wyrm monsters made their debut in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, no prominent characters from that series used them, although some of the "Yang Zing" monsters made cameos as cards that were used as bribes in the Facility.

The following characters use Wyrm monsters across the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

Icons[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • This monster Type is similar to the Psychics, which usually resemble another Type of monster (such as the Machine "Jinzo" monsters). In addition, they debuted in the first Booster Pack of a TV series (5D's and ARC-V), in which a new Summoning method (Synchro and Pendulum) was also introduced.
  • There are currently no Wyrm Ritual Monsters.
  • When Wyrms debuted in SEVENS, the main characters believed they were Dragon monsters until Luke corrected them. When asked what the difference between the two Types is, Luke said he had no clue, poking fun at the nebulous design distinction between the two Types.[1]
