The Graveyard (墓地 Bochi), sometimes translated as Cemetery, is the name for the card discard pile. Specific card(s) in the Graveyard can be recovered by using cards such as "Monster Reborn", "Magician of Faith" or other such cards with applicable effect(s).

The Graveyard (墓地 Bochi), abbreviated as GY in card texts from Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, is the discard pile in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game.

The contents of either player's Graveyards are public knowledge, unless a card like "Question" is used. When a player looks through their opponent's Graveyard, they may neither shuffle its contents, nor re-arrange the order in which the cards were placed there. In the video games, when a card is activated in the Graveyard, or selected for a Card effect, it immediately goes to the top of the Graveyard; this only exists for the purposes of clarification within those video games, and this game mechanic is not used in either the OCG or TCG.

Cards are sent to the Graveyard if they are destroyed, Tributed, discarded, or detached; most Spell and Trap Cards are also placed in the Graveyard after the Chain they were activated in resolves. Monsters used as Fusion, Synchro, or Link Material are sent to the Graveyard (unless otherwise specified).

The Graveyard is placed directly above the Deck Zone, in a location sometimes referred to as the Graveyard Zone. When the Pendulum Zones were introduced, the Graveyard was shifted to directly above (or above and to the right of) the right Pendulum Zone. However, with the introduction of the Extra Monster Zones, the Pendulum Zones were moved into the Spell & Trap Zones and the Graveyard returned to its original position.

In the anime, cards that return from the Graveyard are sometimes depicted as coming out of a portal.

All cards in the Graveyard are face-up, and are public knowledge (unless restricted by a card effect—the only such effect being "Question"). When a player looks through a Graveyard, they cannot reorder the cards in the Graveyard. In video games, when a card in the Graveyard activates its effect or is targeted by a card effect, it is placed on the top of the Graveyard; this game mechanic is not used in the OCG or TCG.

The Graveyard location on a playmat

The Graveyard ( Bochi), abbreviated as GY in card texts from Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, is the discard pile in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game.

Appearance[edit]

Anime[edit]

Yu-Gi-Oh![edit]

The Graveyard as depicted in Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 13.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 13, the graveyard is portrayed as a physical graveyard when Tristan Taylor and Joey Wheeler were turned into cards and sent to the graveyard.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, 5D's, ZEXAL, ARC-V, and VRAINS[edit]

In most of the anime, the Graveyard is not explored as a physical location. Typically, when cards are moved in and out of the graveyard, they are shown to be moving in and out of a dark purple void, sometimes through a portal.

Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS, Graveyard is pictured in different visuals. The first took similar visual cues from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V had, except more detailed to resemble a hole. While the second uses the similar first visual design, with the difference being the inclusion of a darker purple spiral line. The visuals has completely changed in the third depiction into green area with few purple details, while the bottom of the Graveyard is black. The Fourth once again completely change the visuals to a black Graveyard, only becoming lighter gray at the bottom.
