Zombie (Japanese: アンデット Andetto, "Undead") is a Type of Monster Cards.
Contents
Overview
Zombies represent undead beings, including mummies, skeletons, vampires, yokai, biologically-infected humans and animals, ghosts, and of course, zombies. Gameplay-wise, Zombies are heavily associated with the Graveyard and banishing; many of their monster effects and support cards support interactions with Zombies that are banished or in the GY, most commonly through Special Summoning. Zombies are mostly either EARTH or DARK-Attribute.
Despite encompassing a large variety of archetypes and series, there's a recurrent element in most Zombie-based decks, that being a reliance on Graveyard-related effects, particularly sending Zombie monsters from Deck to GY, and reviving them afterwards. Expanding on this, there's a subset of cards that can revive monsters from the opponent's GY, akin to spreading a zombie plague. This playstyle has been consistently supported through the years by the Field Spell Zombie World, which transforms all monsters in the opponent's GY into Zombies. There's also a number of archetypes and cards based on gaining advantage and banishing Zombie monsters from the GY, with many of the Zombie cards released in Dimension Force being centered on this strategy.
Historically, Zombie monsters are characterized by high ATK, but low (many times zero) DEF, reflecting the animalistic nature of the undead and/or the ethereal nature of spirits. However, this is offset by their potent swarming and offensive capabilities, with most Zombie decks aiming to end the duel in the first turns of the game. The Shiranui archetype is an example of this, with all of its members having zero DEF points, while Vampire and Vendread also have a high number of 0 DEF Monster Cards.
The type also has a heavy Synchro Summoning focus, with many of the most powerful Zombie playmakers and boss monsters being Tuner and Synchro monsters, respectively. Uni-Zombie, Plaguespreader Zombie and Glow-Up Bloom are powerful Tuner monsters that are staples in most Zombie decks for this reason.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom, Zombies are treated as Fiend monsters.
Of particular note, the Yokai Type from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga are all turned into Zombies when they were released in the OCG/TCG proper.

Trivia
- "Shiranui Samuraisaga" is the first Zombie Synchro Monster that can be Synchro Summoned without "Plaguespreader Zombie", and is also not a Zombie counterpart of an already existing monster.
- The Japanese name of the Zombie Type, Andetto 「アンデット」, is a non-standard transcription of the English word "undead", normally transcribed as Andeddo 「アンデッド」. Andeddo has been inconsistently used in earlier Yu-Gi-Oh! works, but was later standardized to Andetto.
- It is unclear why Yu-Gi-Oh! uses this non-standard transcription; it's speculated that Andetto was originally a typo that was maintained for the sake of consistency.
