Type (種族 Shuzoku, lit. "tribe"; shortened to 族 -zoku when used as a suffix) is a characteristic of Monster Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! media and card games. It represents the monster's "biological" grouping, and are involved in card effects in the card games.

A Type ((種)族 (Shu)zoku) is a characteristic of a Monster Card. All monsters have one Type, such that monsters of the same Type can be grouped together (in a similar way to Attributes) and support cards can grant various effects to a specific Type of monster.
+
List
 +
The following Types have appeared throughout various games. The list is initially ordered roughly by first appearance of each Type.

There are 25 different Types in the TCG and OCG. Two of these types are highly exclusive: the Divine-Beast-Type is shared only by the Egyptian Gods, and was originally considered illegal until tournament-legal versions of the Egyptian God Cards were released; and the Creator God-Type is exclusive to "Holactie the Creator of Light". A 26th Type, Immortal, only appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.
+
The "debut" column refers to when the Type was first mentioned by name.

"Type" should not be confused with "type" (with a lowercase "t"), which refers to the three main types of cards: Monster, Spell, and Trap.
+
The "manga" column only refers to Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! R, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series, as later entries fully match the Type roster of the OCG.

OCG/TCG
+
The "DDM" column refers to the real-world, manga, and video-game versions of Dungeon Dice Monsters.
These Types exist within the OCG and TCG.

Non-OCG/TCG
+
Non-game Types
Immortal is a Type appearing in the video game Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.
+
These Types are only mentioned in cards not intended for use in Duels, so they are only meant as tongue-in-cheek references and are not considered valid for gameplay purposes (even if those cards are printed in real life), such as for card effects that require the player to declare a Type's name.
 +
* Human (人間 Ningen) is the Type used for "Everyone's King", a card appearing in a fantasy Carly Carmine had in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime. It was released as a non-game card in the OCG/TCG, where it maintained this Type.
 +
* Charisma (カリスマ Karisuma) is a Type used as a joke on "Charisma Token".
 +
* ? is used on some Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links Token cards to indicate the Token's Type is variable. (See also: List of ?-Type monsters)
 +
* In the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime, the Newspaper Club used a card-printing machine to create their own cards with their own original Types and Attributes. The Types included:
 +
** Business (ビジネス Bijinesu) for "The★Luke Division Manager"
 +
** Newspaper (新聞 Shinbun) for "Masa on the Mic" and "Cub the Picture Popping Paparazzi"
 +
** Swindler (詐欺 Sagi) for "Tracker the Ultimate Treasure Hunter"
 +
** Son (息子 Musuko) for "Good Yosh the Overcrusher"
 +
** Swirls (グルグル Guruguru) for "Adorable Newbie Swirls"

The Duelists of the Roses also lists Power Up, Ritual, Spell and Trap as a Type.
+
Card text
 +
In the OCG and TCG, when a Type is mentioned in a card text, it is suffixed with "-Type". From Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, this was dropped in the TCG.
 +
Western versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links use "-Type" in most cards' texts, even some that were printed after Link Strike and never included it in TCG.

Yokai is a Type appearing only in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX manga.
+
The international versions of Rush Duel cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! and Duel Links do not use the hyphen, including the flavor text of the Normal Monster "Summoned Skull".

Human is a Type appearing only in a character's fantasy in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime.
+
Rush Duel
 +
There are 29 different Types in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel; they include all Types from the OCG/TCG, except for Illusion, Divine-Beast, and Creator God.

Black Magic, White Magic, Sea Beast, Illusion Magic, and Dragon Magic are among the additional Types used in the Bandai card game.
+
Five of these types (all newly-added ones) are exclusive to certain Fusion Monsters, which are thematically fusions of other Types:
 +
* Celestial Warrior (Warrior + Fairy)
 +
* Cyborg (Machine + non-Machine)
 +
* High Dragon (Dragon + Dragon)
 +
* Magical Knight (Spellcaster + non-Spellcaster)
 +
* Omega Psychic (Psychic + Psychic)

Various monsters of the Beast-, Beast-Warrior-, and Winged Beast Types in the artwork of "The Big Cattle Drive".

Type (しゅぞく Shuzoku, lit. "tribe"; shortened to ぞく -zoku when used as a suffix) is a characteristic of Monster Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! media and card games. It represents the monster's "biological" grouping, and are involved in card effects in the card games.

In the North American English version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories, Type is referred to as Class, abbreviated to Cl. This is changed to Type and Tp respectively in the European English version.[n 1]

List[edit]

The following Types have appeared throughout various games. The list is initially ordered roughly by first appearance of each Type.

The "debut" column refers to when the Type was first mentioned by name.

The "manga" column only refers to Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! R, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series, as later entries fully match the Type roster of the OCG.

The "DDM" column refers to the real-world, manga, and video-game versions of Dungeon Dice Monsters.

Non-game Types[edit]

These Types are only mentioned in cards not intended for use in Duels, so they are only meant as tongue-in-cheek references and are not considered valid for gameplay purposes (even if those cards are printed in real life), such as for card effects that require the player to declare a Type's name.

Card text[edit]

In the OCG and TCG, when a Type is mentioned in a card text, it is suffixed with "-Type". From Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, this was dropped in the TCG. Western versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links use "-Type" in most cards' texts, even some that were printed after Link Strike and never included it in TCG.

The international versions of Rush Duel cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! and Duel Links do not use the hyphen, including the flavor text of the Normal Monster "Summoned Skull".

Rush Duel[edit]

There are 29 different Types in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel; they include all Types from the OCG/TCG, except for Illusion, Divine-Beast, and Creator God.

Five of these types (all newly-added ones) are exclusive to certain Fusion Monsters, which are thematically fusions of other Types:
