Some English video games refer to Black Magic, White Magic, Demon Magic, Illusion Magic, Water, Fire and Divine as Shadow, Light, Fiend, Dreams, Aqua, Pyro and Devine respectively. In the Bandai game, the four Magic users are used as Types. In the OCG and TCG, Water, Wind, Fire and Earth are used as Attributes, although Earth uses different kanji, Thunder and Demon have Type equivalents; Thunder and Fiend, while the other Magic users are classed as Spellcaster-Type.

Manga basis[edit]

Alignments are for the most part derived from concepts from the early manga Duel Monsters. In the manga, the four Magic Users were Types, five of the six elements were Attributes and Divine was used to describe the Egyptian God cards. The strengths and weaknesses of the Magic Users and some of the elements were taken from the manga.
