Alignment, also known as Summon (召喚 Shōkan), is a card property used in the early Gameboy Duel Monsters rules.

The name "Summon" is used consistently throughout the Japanese games. The North American English Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories uses the name "Alignment". The European English Dark Duel Stories uses the name "Attribute". The English Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards and Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction use the name "Summon".

Cards of particular Alignments have strengths and weaknesses against cards of other particular alignments. There are four Magic User Alignments, six elemental Alignments, and the Divine Alignment.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories, each Alignment with the exception of Divine is represented with a Guardian Star.

Manga basis

Alignments are for the most part derived from concepts from the early manga Duel Monsters. In the manga, the four Magic Users were Types, five of the six elements were Attributes and Divine was used to describe the Egyptian God cards. The strengths and weaknesses of the Magic Users and some of the elements were taken from the manga.
