Contact Fusion (Japanese OCG: コンタクト
Contact Fusion is not an official term in the TCG/OCG. However, it has appeared in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, some official Konami sources,[1] and the flavor text of "Elemental HERO Neos".
Contents
Mechanics
Contact Fusion is a built-in Special Summon of a Fusion Monster by that monster's own Summoning procedure, so it is a proper Special Summon and does not start a Chain.
The monsters involved in the Contact Fusion are usually listed as Fusion Materials on the Fusion Monster. However, rarely, the monsters used in a Contact Fusion are fully distinct from the monsters listed as Fusion Materials, and are instead described in the Summoning conditions itself; in all such cases, these Fusion Monsters also have the condition that they can be Fusion Summoned normally.
A Contact Fusion is not a Fusion Summon in the TCG/OCG (although it is in Rush Duel), but the listed monsters are still treated as being used as Fusion Material, so cards that cannot be used as a Fusion Material are still not allowed, unless the restriction is specified to apply for Fusion Summons.[2] In addition, materials used for a Contact Fusion cannot be replaced by Fusion Substitute Monsters.
The location that the Fusion Materials are used from and how they are used are both specified in the card text defining the Special Summon procedure. Fusion Materials for a Contact Fusion are more often used from the field or Graveyard, and can be banished, returned to the Deck, sent to the Graveyard, or Tributed.
If a face-down monster is being used as a material for a Contact Fusion that returns it to the Deck, the player conducting the Summon must show that monster before shuffling it into the Deck to allow the opponent to verify the card's identity. This is unnecessary for Contact Fusions conducted via banishing, sending to the Graveyard, or Tributing, as their Fusion Materials can be publicly verified afterwards.
Card text
All Fusion Monsters that can be Summoned by Contact Fusion in the TCG/OCG so far are Special Summon-only monsters, so they can be identified by having the text "Must [first] be Special Summoned [from your Extra Deck] by [moving] the above cards [...].". In older card texts, they also included the phrase "(You do not use "Polymerization".)" at the end of the Summoning condition,[1] but stopped being the case starting with Duelist Pack: Duelists of Gloom (May 2020) in the OCG and Legendary Duelists: Rage of Ra (September 2020) in the TCG.
In Rush Duel, Contact Fusion-able monsters are identified by the simpler sentence "You can Summon this card by Contact Fusion.", followed by a specific explanation of the procedure similar to the TCG/OCG Summoning condition.
Appearances
Yu-Gi-Oh! manga
Contact Fusion first appeared in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, where Magnet monsters could be combined together without the use of "Polymerization" to form a new monster. This Summoning method was generally called "Fusion Combination" (
Two sets of Magnet monsters were seen in the manga: The A-to-Z monsters ("X-Head Cannon", "Y-Dragon Head", and "Z-Metal Tank"), which combined into "XY-Dragon Cannon" and "XYZ-Dragon Cannon"; and the "Magnet Warrior" monsters ("Alpha", "Beta", and "Gamma"), which combined into "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior".
Unlike a Fusion Summon with "Polymerization", monsters Summoned by Fusion Combination could attack in the same turn they were Summoned.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
The common term Contact Fusion originated from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, where it was used to refer to the Summoning procedures of "Neos" Fusion Monsters, which are Summoned by shuffling their Fusion Materials from the field into the Deck.
Despite the use of the term "Contact Fusion", the Summoning methods of Fusion Monsters other than "Neos" monsters Summoned by their Summoning conditions continued to be referred as Fusion Combination.[citation needed]
Contact Fusions involving "Elemental HERO Neos" and 2 or more "Neo-Spacian" monsters were referred to by special names:
- Triple Contact Fusion (トリプルコンタクト
融 合 Toripuru Kontakuto Yūgō) is a Contact Fusion using 3 Fusion Materials. Monsters such as "Elemental HERO Chaos Neos" were Summoned this way. - Ultimate Contact Fusion (
究 極 コンタクト融 合 Kyūkyoku Kontakuto Yūgō) is a Contact Fusion using 7 Fusion Materials. "Elemental HERO Divine Neos" was the only monster Summoned in this way in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, by fusing "Elemental HERO Neos" with all the 6 "Neo-Spacian" monsters. However, in the TCG/OCG, "Elemental HERO Divine Neos" must be Fusion Summoned (with a total of 5 materials) instead.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links
In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, the Contact Fusion of "Elemental HERO Cosmo Neos", which uses 4 Fusion Materials, is called a Quadruple Contact Fusion (クアドラプルコンタクト

Trivia
- In the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime, instances of Contact Fusion were incorrectly referred to as Fusion Summons, even though they are technically not Fusion Summoning.
- Contact Fusion can be considered a precursor to Synchro Summon, as it only requires the proper monsters on the field and the appropriate monster in the Extra Deck, without the need of a Spell Card (as used in most Ritual Summons and Fusion Summons).
