* Contact Fusion is not a Fusion Summon, as it is a type of built-in Special Summon. Attempting to Special Summon via Contact Fusion opens the Summon negation window and does not start a Chain.

Contact Fusion first appeared in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, where Magnet monsters could be combined together without the use of "Polymerization" to form a new monster. This Summoning method was generally called "Fusion Combination" (融合合体 Yūgō Gattai) by characters.citation needed

* All monsters involved in the Special Summon must be on the side of the field of the player conducting the Contact Fusion (not the case for "Chimeratech Fortress Dragon"), and cannot be replaced by Fusion Substitute Monsters.

Two sets of Magnet monsters were seen in the manga: The A-to-Z monsters ("X-Head Cannon", "Y-Dragon Head", and "Z-Metal Tank"), which combined into "XY-Dragon Cannon" and "XYZ-Dragon Cannon"; and the "Magnet Warrior" monsters ("Alpha", "Beta", and "Gamma"), which combined into "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior".

Unlike a Fusion Summon with "Polymerization", monsters Summoned by Fusion Combination could attack in the same turn they were Summoned.
** This is redundant for Contact Fusions conducted via banishing or sending to the Graveyard, as their Fusion Materials can be publicly verified afterwards.

* Much like all Extra Deck monsters, Fusion Monsters that use Contact Fusion can be Special Summoned from the Graveyard or the Banished Zone, as long as they were successfully Special Summoned from the Extra Deck via Contact Fusion first. This term was later applied to the "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monsters by players, as those monsters Special Summon themselves via the same method (though it was not referred to as such in the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V when the Gladiator Beasts were used).

"Elemental HERO Neos" performing a Contact Fusion in the artwork of "Miracle Contact"

Contact Fusion (コンタクトゆうごう Kontakuto Yūgō) is a semi-official term which means to Special Summon a Fusion Monster using its own Summoning procedure, instead of being Fusion Summoned or Special Summoned by another card's effect.

Contact Fusion is not an official term in the TCG/OCG. However, it has appeared in the anime, some official Konami sources,[1] and the flavor text of "Elemental HERO Neos".

Mechanics

Contact Fusion is a built-in Special Summon of a Fusion Monster by that monster's own Summoning procedure, so it is a proper Special Summon and does not start a Chain.

The monsters involved in the Contact Fusion are usually listed as Fusion Materials on the Fusion Monster. However, rarely, the monsters used in a Contact Fusion are fully distinct from the monsters listed as Fusion Materials, and are instead described in the Summoning conditions itself; in all such cases, these Fusion Monsters will also have the condition that they can also be Fusion Summoned.

As Contact Fusion is not a Fusion Summon, the materials cannot be replaced by Fusion Substitute Monsters. However, they are still used as Fusion Materials[citation needed], so cards that cannot be used as a Fusion Material still cannot be used as Fusion Material for a Contact Fusion.

The location that the Fusion Materials are used from and how they are used are both specified in the card text defining the Special Summon procedure. Fusion Materials for a Contact Fusion are often used from the field or Graveyard; and are often used by being banished, returned to the Deck, sent to the Graveyard, or Tributed for the Contact Fusion.

If a face-down monster is being used as a material for a Contact Fusion that returns it to the Deck, the player conducting the Summon must show that monster before shuffling it into the Deck to allow the opponent to verify the card's identity. This is unnecessary for Contact Fusions conducted via banishing, sending to the Graveyard, or Tributing, as their Fusion Materials can be publicly verified afterwards.

Card text

Fusion Monsters that can be Summoned by Contact Fusion are identified by text "Must be" or "Must first be", followed by a Summoning procedure involving manually moving cards (i.e. excluding "Must be Fusion Summoned", or "Must be Special Summoned by [card's effect]".

In older card texts, monsters that can be Summoned by Contact Fusion contain the text "(You do not use "Polymerization".)".[1] This text is no longer used, starting from Legendary Duelists: Rage of Ra (September 2020) in the TCG and Duelist Pack: Duelists of Gloom (May 2020) in the OCG.

Appearances

Yu-Gi-Oh! manga

Contact Fusion first appeared in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, where Magnet monsters could be combined together without the use of "Polymerization" to form a new monster. This Summoning method was generally called "Fusion Combination" (ゆうごうがったい Yūgō Gattai) by characters.[citation needed]

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

The common term Contact Fusion originated from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, where it was used to refer to the Summoning procedures of "Neos" Fusion Monsters, which are Summoned by shuffling their Fusion Materials from the field into the Deck.

Despite the use of the term "Contact Fusion", the Summoning methods of Fusion Monsters other than "Neos" monsters Summoned by their Summoning conditions continued to be referred as Fusion Combination.[citation needed]

Contact Fusions involving "Elemental HERO Neos" and 2 or more "Neo-Spacian" monsters were referred to by special names:

 • Triple Contact Fusion (トリプルコンタクトゆうごう Toripuru Kontakuto Yūgō) is a Contact Fusion using 3 Fusion Materials. Monsters such as "Elemental HERO Chaos Neos" were Summoned this way.
 • Ultimate Contact Fusion (きゅうきょくコンタクトゆうごう Kyūkyoku Kontakuto Yūgō) is a Contact Fusion using 7 Fusion Materials. "Elemental HERO Divine Neos" was the only monster Summoned in this way in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, by fusing "Elemental HERO Neos" with all the 6 "Neo-Spacian" monsters. However, in the TCG/OCG, "Elemental HERO Divine Neos" must be Fusion Summoned (with a total of 5 materials) instead.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, the Contact Fusion of "Elemental HERO Cosmo Neos", which uses 4 Fusion Materials, is called a Quadruple Contact Fusion (クアドラプルコンタクトゆうごう Kuadorapuru Kontakuto Yūgō) by Jaden/Yubel's voicelines.
