It requires overlaying 2 or more monsters on the field with the same Level, or satisfying an alternative method involving a previous Xyz Monster.

In order to Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster, you must first take the required Xyz Materials face-up on your side of the field and stack them together. Then, the Xyz Monster is Xyz Summoned from your Extra Deck, and placed on top of the stack.
+
When an Xyz Monster is Xyz Summoned, the Xyz Materials are stacked into a single pile, with the Xyz Summoned Xyz Monster placed on top of this pile. In the anime, this process is referred to as "overlaying" the Xyz Materials.

Xyz Materials are not sent to the Graveyard. Instead, they are placed on the same Monster Card Zone beneath the Summoned Xyz Monster. In this state, they are not treated as monsters, nor are they treated as being on the field.
+
Mechanics
 +
During their Main Phase, the turn player can Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster from their Extra Deck by stacking two or more face-up monsters from their field with the same Level as the Xyz Monster's printed Rank, that meet the listed requirements for its Xyz Materials. After that, the player Special Summons the Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck face-up to an unoccupied Main or Extra Monster Zone, and places the stacked Xyz Materials underneath that Xyz Monster.

Trap Monsters can be used as Xyz Materials, but not Token Monsters, as Tokens cannot be in any state other than being on the field. <!-- Have Tokens ever been used as Xyz Materials in the anime/manga or otherwise outside the OCG/TCG? Someone please check this. -->
+
Monsters that do not have Levels, such as Xyz Monsters and Link Monsters, cannot normally be used as Xyz Materials for an Xyz Summon. However, some Xyz Monsters (e.g. "Number F0: Utopic Future") specifically list Xyz Monsters as materials, in which case they can use Xyz Monsters as material. Unless specified otherwise, Xyz Materials of an Xyz Monster(s) that were used as a material for an Xyz Summon will be sent to the Graveyard. Token Monsters cannot be used as Xyz Material for an Xyz Summon, because they cannot be attached as Xyz Materials due to not existing outside of the field.

The battle positions of the Xyz Materials do not matter, as long as they are all face-up. However, once you have Xyz Summoned your Xyz Monster, ensure that the entire stack is neatly aligned in face-up attack position, regardless of whether or not the Xyz Monster is summoned in face-up ATK or DEF position.
+
Even if all of its controller's Monster Zones are occupied, an Xyz Monster can still be Xyz Summoned as long as at least one of the Xyz Materials used is in one of these zones, so that there is an available zone when the Xyz Monster is Summoned.

An Xyz Summon is a type of Special Summon, and an Xyz Monster is a Special Summon-only monster.
+
Xyz Summoning with a single material
 +
Several Xyz Monsters have effects that allow them to be Xyz Summoned using a single monster, rather than using their their listed Xyz Materials. Depending on their individual specifications, it may be possible to Xyz Summon the Xyz Monster over an Xyz Monster (e.g. "Number C39: Utopia Ray"), a non-Xyz Monster (e.g. "Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star"), or either an Xyz or non-Xyz Monster (e.g. "Zoodiac" Xyz Monsters).

Xyz Monsters frequently have effects that require you to remove an Xyz Material(s) from beneath it, known as detaching. When this happens, the Materials are sent to the Graveyard. Some Xyz Monsters have negative effects if they have no Xyz Materials left beneath them.
+
In most cases where an Xyz Monster can be Xyz Summoned using a single Xyz Monster as material, the new Xyz Monster will specify that the materials attached to the original Xyz Monster are transferred to the new Xyz Monster.

Note that an Xyz Monster Special Summoned via any means other than an Xyz Summon (except in certain cases such as with "Xyz Reborn") will not have any Xyz Materials beneath it, and in such a case, any negative effects that they may have will be applied immediately.
+
In the anime and manga, Xyz Summoning using an Xyz Monster as the sole material is referred to as Xyz Evolution. This includes both when done via the Xyz Monster's own Summoning procedure as well as a Special Summon by another card's effect (such as "Rank-Up-Magic") that is treated as an Xyz Summon.

If an Xyz Monster leaves the field or otherwise ceases to be a monster (such as being treated as an Equip Card by "Destiny HERO - Plasma", or being treated as an Xyz Material by "Number 101: Silent Honor ARK"), then its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard, unless the card effect says otherwise, such as those of the "Rank-Up-Magic" archetype. If an Xyz Monster is flipped face-down, its Xyz Materials stay where they are.
+
Xyz Summoning with different materials
 +
Some Xyz Monsters have effects that let them treat monsters that do not fit their Xyz Material requirements as if they did, for their Xyz Summon. For example, "Dhampir Vampire Sheridan" can treat monsters owned by the opponent as Level 6, and "Gigantic Spright" can treat Link-2 monsters as Level 2.

Since Xyz Materials are not treated as monsters, they will not be affected by a card like "Dimensional Fissure" (which causes any monsters that would be sent to the Graveyard to be banished instead). While "Dimensional Fissure" is on the field, detaching Xyz Materials still sends them to the Graveyard. If the Xyz Monster leaves the field, its Xyz Materials are still sent to the Graveyard, and if the Xyz Monster is destroyed, it will be banished while its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard.

 +
While Xyz Summoning is a type of built-in Special Summon, so is performed without the use of any card effect, there are some card effects that can perform Xyz Summons immediately after their resolution.

If a card effect banishes all cards that would be sent to the Graveyard (such as "Macro Cosmos" or "Banisher of the Radiance"), then when an Xyz Monster leaves the field, its Xyz Materials will be banished. An Xyz Monster can still detach its Materials while such an effect is active; the Xyz Materials will be banished instead of being sent to the Graveyard.
+
Treating a Special Summon as a Xyz Summon
 +
Treats Special Summon as Xyz Summon
 +
Some card effects can Special Summon an Xyz Monster, treating that Special Summon as an Xyz Summon. This type of Special Summon is not an Xyz Summon despite being treated as one, so it does not necessarily follow any mechanics of an Xyz Summon.

In the anime, using monsters to perform an Xyz Summon is known as overlaying them (similar to how performing a Synchro Summon is known as tuning the Tuner monster with the non-Tuner monster(s)). When an Xyz Summon is performed, a red-colored spiral portal known as an Overlay Network appears. The Xyz Materials turn into forms of energy which enter the portal, and then the newly Summoned Xyz Monster emerges from the portal. Certain monsters, especially "Number" monsters, may have unique or specially designed Overlay Networks of a different color or shape. The idea of a spiral-shaped portal is derived from Konami's statement that Xyz Monsters entered our universe through a black hole. However, in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, all Xyz Summons so far have used the galaxy-style spiral portal used largely by "Number" cards from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL.
+
Commonly, card effects that Special Summon an Xyz Monster (treated as an Xyz Summon) will use an on-field monster as material (e.g. the "Rank-Up-Magic" Spell Cards). This functions identically to Xyz Summoning with a single material via a monster's Summon monster effects, and typically the Xyz Materials of the on-field monster (if it is an Xyz Monster) will be transferred to the Special Summoned Xyz Monster. In the anime and manga, this is referred to as Xyz Evolution.

Xyz Summon

An Xyz Summon (pronounced ik-seez[1]; Japanese: エクシーズしょうかん Ekushīzu Shōkan, abbreviated エクシーズしょうかん in card text since Duelist Alliance) is the standard method for Special Summoning an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck. It requires overlaying 2 or more monsters on the field with the same Level, or satisfying an alternative method involving a previous Xyz Monster.

When an Xyz Monster is Xyz Summoned, the Xyz Materials are stacked into a single pile, with the Xyz Summoned Xyz Monster placed on top of this pile. In the anime, this process is referred to as "overlaying" the Xyz Materials.

Mechanics[edit]

During their Main Phase, the turn player can Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster from their Extra Deck by stacking two or more face-up monsters from their field with the same Level as the Xyz Monster's printed Rank, that meet the listed requirements for its Xyz Materials. After that, the player Special Summons the Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck face-up to an unoccupied Main or Extra Monster Zone, and places the stacked Xyz Materials underneath that Xyz Monster.

Even if all of its controller's Monster Zones are occupied, an Xyz Monster can still be Xyz Summoned as long as at least one of the Xyz Materials used is in one of these zones, so that there is an available zone when the Xyz Monster is Summoned.

Xyz Summoning with a single material[edit]

Several Xyz Monsters have effects that allow them to be Xyz Summoned using a single monster, rather than using their their listed Xyz Materials. Depending on their individual specifications, it may be possible to Xyz Summon the Xyz Monster over an Xyz Monster (e.g. "Number C39: Utopia Ray"), a non-Xyz Monster (e.g. "Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star"), or either an Xyz or non-Xyz Monster (e.g. "Zoodiac" Xyz Monsters).

In most cases where an Xyz Monster can be Xyz Summoned using a single Xyz Monster as material, the new Xyz Monster will specify that the materials attached to the original Xyz Monster are transferred to the new Xyz Monster.

Xyz Summoning with different materials[edit]

Some Xyz Monsters have effects that let them treat monsters that do not fit their Xyz Material requirements as if they did, for their Xyz Summon. For example, "Dhampir Vampire Sheridan" can treat monsters owned by the opponent as Level 6, and "Gigantic Spright" can treat Link-2 monsters as Level 2.

Xyz Summoning with a card effect[edit]

While Xyz Summoning is a type of built-in Special Summon, so is performed without the use of any card effect, there are some card effects that can perform Xyz Summons immediately after their resolution.

Treating a Special Summon as a Xyz Summon[edit]

Some card effects can Special Summon an Xyz Monster, treating that Special Summon as an Xyz Summon. This type of Special Summon is not an Xyz Summon despite being treated as one, so it does not necessarily follow any mechanics of an Xyz Summon.

Example[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Anime[edit]

When an Xyz Summon is performed, the Xyz Materials turn into forms of energy whose colors match their Attributes before shooting into the air, sometimes spiraling around each other. A swirling portal known as an Overlay Network then appears, and the energy forms enter the portal. The newly Summoned Xyz Monster then emerges from the portal, its Xyz Materials, now colored in accordance with its Attribute, orbiting around it as spheres of light that leave behind fading trails.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL[edit]

A standard Xyz Summon in ZEXAL

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, the portal is usually a simple red vortex that twists shut and explodes in multi-colored light, but certain monsters have unique or specially designed Overlay Networks of a different color or design. The most obvious example is the "Number" archetype, which employs a more grandiose visual of yellow particles over a dark purple nebula, forming a distinct spiral shape highly resembling a stylized galaxy.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V[edit]

An Xyz Summon in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V — a blue pillar emerges from the portal rather than it closing

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, all Xyz Summons use the "galaxy-style" portal, although compacted in size, as well as replacing the "shutting and exploding" effect with a simpler pillar of blue energy erupting out from the center. Some minor variations exist, such as "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon" producing red energy instead.

An Xyz Summon performed using monsters that have been Pendulum Summoned is referred to as a "Pendulum-Xyz Summon". Shay Obsidian refers to an Xyz Summon performed using both an Xyz Monster and a non-Xyz Monster as materials as a Cross Xyz Summon.

Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS[edit]

An Xyz Summon in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, the entire Xyz Summon sequence is remade: when the Duelist declares that they are overlaying their monsters, lightning crackles from them before a blue X-shaped cybernetic array (somewhat similar in design to the Link Summoning Circuit) with four small red circles between the spokes materializes behind them. The Xyz Materials disperse into colored particles and enter the red circles and once they are set, datastream-like energy flows from the tips and forms the galaxy-style Overlay Network, now entirely colored light blue, from which the newly formed Xyz Monster emerges. The process is reminiscent of a sci-fi device being used to open a wormhole.

Close up of the "array" used to create an Overlay Network.

Video games[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6 and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special, all Xyz Summons use the generic red vortex animation.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL World Duel Carnival, there are three different Xyz Summon animations matching the ones used in the ZEXAL anime (non-"Number", "Number", and Chaos Xyz Evolution).

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, all Xyz Summons use the yellow galaxy-style portal animation.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, VRAINS characters, as well as Standard Duelists in Duel World (VRAINS), use a different Xyz Summon animation. This animation is based on the Xyz Summoning animation used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime.

Trivia[edit]

  • When Xyz Summons were revealed in the OCG, they were at originally translated by fans as "Exceed Summons". This was likely because "Xyz" is not an actual word and has no immediately obvious pronunciation. The word "Exceed" was likely the closest English equivalent to the Japanese エクシーズ Ekushīzu.
    • In the Chinese OCG, the term for "Xyz" is 超量 Chāoliàng, which means "Exceeding".
