Hobson

Hobson, known as Daimon in the first series anime, and simply "Kaiba's butler" in the manga and the English version of the Dungeon Dice Monsters video game, is Seto Kaiba's faithful retainer, rarely leaving his side. He differs greatly between the various adaptations of the series. In the manga, he is sadistic and cruel; in the first series anime he is shown to have faith in the hope that Kaiba will find his heart; he barely appears in the second series anime, his only appearance of importance being forcing Solomon Muto to duel his master.

In both the manga and 2nd series anime, he is the reincarnation of Gebelk.

Manga biography

History

Hobson once worked as an torturer, where he learnd to resist torture himself, before being employed by the Kaiba family.[1]

Using his skills as a torturer, Hobson designed the electric chair ride part of Kaiba's Death-T theme park. The ride was designed to make the participants scream, which they must resist doing to avoid being electrocuted with ten million volts.[1]

Russian Roulette

Before the grand opening of Kaiba Land, he appears when Yugi and Jonouchi are invited to the Kaiba mansion. He along with other servants greet them and Mokuba when they arrive. He explains that Kaiba won't be attending the grand opening of his special project, as he has retired to his room, having worked nonstop for the few days.[2]

Mokuba has him prepare six meals, including two poisoned ones for his rigged game of Russian Roulette Dinner with Yugi and Jonouchi. When the game backfires and Mokuba is poisoned, Hobson comes to his aid.[2]

Death-T

Hobson, during Death-T

The next day, Yugi is forced to take part in Death-T. Hobson, dressed in dark robes, meets him and his friends at the second stage. His sudden appearance gives Jonouchi a fright. Hobson cackles that if that scared Jonouchi, he won't survive the next ride. He is about to lead the group to the electric chair ride, when Yugi recognizes him as the butler from Kaiba's mansion. Hobson was hoping that they wouldn't notice, but nevertheless proceeds and takes them to a car on a set of rails. [1]

Yugi, Jonouchi, Honda, Anzu take seats on the car and Johji sits on Anzu's lap. Hobson locks them on, by cuffing their hands to the arm rests and has helmets with voice detectors put on their heads. He explains that they are about to take part on a ride, where they must not scream or they will be electrocuted. He too takes part in the game, running the risk of being electrocuted. Having designed the ride and knowing how to avoid screaming, he thinks he should be fine and can use his torture skills to make the others scream.[1]

Hobson gets electrocuted.

He subjects the group to scary projections of monsters. Impressed that they managed to avoid screaing, he moves onto the next phase. Mechanical hands comes out of the chairs and start to feel and grope the players. Johji worries that Anzu is going to scream, so he gets down from her lap and goes back to Hobson, where he defecates on his lap. Once Hobson realizes what just happened, he screams out loud and is electrocuted.[1]

First series anime biography

First series

In the first series anime Daimon is one of Kaiba's Game Masters. He requires a life-support capsule to stay alive. He is able to leave the capsule for short periods, however. He and Seto were good friends when Seto was a child, with Seto bringing him snacks like oranges when Daimon first got sick.

Seto releases him from the capsule so he can be the fourth opponent to challenge Yugi. By staging an accident, Seto is able to lure Yugi to duel Daimon. If Yugi refuses, Anzu will be devoured by a mechanical dragon. During this duel, Daimon states that the reason that he duels for Seto is that he belives in Seto's good side to come out again. Seto provides Daimon with a device that will allow him to see Yugi's hand, but Daimon refuses to use it. After being defeated, Daimon takes Yugi aside and tells him to restore Seto's lost innocence.
